2023-05-02 04:41:32 I have total faith that free will is real - your choices are 100% your own, no matter what might be influencing you, conscious or subconscious. Michael saying it's an illusion reinforces my perception of him as a dick. Also his speech about being a good son is something Dean has grown past by now. If Dean is to face a choice between saying yes to Michael or being wracked with guilt, that's still Dean's choice which he has the free will to make. I only believe in destiny in terms of things that have happened. Sure there may be some things you're powerless to stop, but that doesn't mean you haven't got total free will to want to stop them. Take 'fixed points in time' from that other show, for example - they don't defy free will, they just represent your relative lack of power when up against the laws of nature. It's the will that's free, not the action. I loved that they continued the Terminator reference in this episode, including the part with the shot-for-shot remake of a certain scene in context. John died in 2006, because it was at the beginning of Season 2, which ended in 2007. You might say, after the scene in the car and John threatening to turn it around, that now there will be no Cape Canaveral for anybody.

i agree with you about the free-will, but to say Michael's a dick seems a bit of a stretch. He actually seems reasonable here. Saying that he will not leave Dean a drooling mess, he's not a hardass like Raphael, he's not a trickster or hiding like Gabriel, he's not evil like Lucifer. I think Michael gets a bit of a bad rap due to a similar character later in the series.
