Chess Red Eagle

This is, by a country mile, the biggest change they've made to the story so far and will definitely have people talking about it for years to come. I, and it seems the vast majority of people. love this episode. It's absolutely fantastic. It's also incredibly refreshing to see that in a series filled to the brim with people just trying to survive in this shit world we get to see the lives of two people not just surviving...but living. And to live a long life together and go out on their own terms. It's such a beautiful story. If you're interested I'm going to go over some differences since it is so different. No spoilers for the future, just up to this point in the story. If not, you can leave it here. 10/10 episode easily. Really, the only thing accurate to the games are the names, the fact they are gay and in a relationship, and the fact that Joel ultimately leaves the town with Ellie in a truck listening to an old country song. Otherwise, TOTALLY different. In the game, Bill and Frank only knew each other for a few years because Joel didn't know Frank. Also, by the time Joel and Ellie arrive to the city, which is MUCH bigger and full of infected since you know, game stuff, Bill is alone and far more closed off and standoff-ish. If I can take you back to the argument they had in the show where Frank wants to fix up the house and town and Bill eventually gives in and lets him, I imagine they had a similar fight in the game, except this time Bill refused to budge. He had things set up how he liked and refused to alter anything. You learn it eventually drove Frank away. He grew to hate Bill. Even worse, while running from a group you stumble into a house and find Frank hanging. He had been bitten and killed himself to stop from turning. It was truly a tragic tale. I think I like this version better although they both do the job in storytelling that they set out to which is where the discussions come from. Loved the reaction. Til next week!

Also, the choice of song as Bill and Frank are going to bed for the final time is ripped straight from the game. It's called "Vanishing Grace" and has some context from the game that I won't spoil that makes that song choice especially cruel. Genius...but cruel. Bastards. lol
