There's a fun fan theory (and some fics) in which The Immortal is none other than Lucifer Morningstar lol It doesn't fit the Lucifer timeline but it is fun to think about. Even though I hate Fred's death getting so much attention and Cordelia's basically getting none, it's awful none of them gave thought to the Burkles. Fred even told Wesley what she wanted him to tell them but he didn't respect her dying request. Of course it's an awful conversation to have but what were they gonna do? Let them think Fred wanted nothing to do with them anymore (which is what will happen if Illyria doesn't actively keep up the lie, despite Wesley telling her never to do it again) or were they all too selfish? Well Gunn was in the hell dimension for awhile and Spike never met them so they gets the biggest pass. But still. It's a terrible look none of them considered the Burkles. I wasn't a fan of the Italy story. It feels to late in the season for wacky hijinks and Spike and Angel arguing over Buffy.

I can imagine Tom Ellis asking SMG what she desires. Now you've put that image in my head xD But yeah, it is a bit of a low blow they never said anything to the Burkles

I also didn't like that there wasn't as much mourning over Cordelia. I like to think it happened a lot off screen. I also would reason that Fred's death was more sudden and cruel whereas Cordelia was more peaceful and divine. Maybe it was easier to accept the latter's death

@Rey , I think it has everything do with Joss' favoritism of Amy and his cruelty towards Charisma.

A what-could-have-been scenario for this episode: Originally it was not Andrew who was intended to appear, but DAWN. However Michelle Trachtenberg was working on a movie, so it was not to be. Would have loved a Spike & Nibblet reunion.

Honestly I'm pretty sure that WOULD have been a plot point in a later season but since they got cancelled halfway through making season 5 they probably couldn't find a good to really bring it up in this season hence the half measure of this episode.

I'll be honest, while the Immortal makes perfect narrative sense as a foil to Angel and Spike and much hilarity ensues, I absolutely despise what this implies about Buffys character and her journey past season 7. Leaving aside the fact that she really is just a gimmick in this episode, not even an actual character at all, the apparent implication is that there was never anything special about her relationship with Angel or Spike, no personality-based deeper reason, no, it seems she's just compulsively drawn to immortal dudes with abusive tendencies and that's the joke now. Also the first thing she does after founding a brand-new organization with a level of power and influence never before seen, is to throw herself at the first important-seeming dude she can find. This is not the Buffy we know and love, the character Buffy would not do this. This is Buffy the gimmick, not the person. (I'm consciously leaving out the comics here, because I don't think they're relevant to what the original intention was with this episode)

I agree with Clara, I think the comics are an afterthought and they really wanted us to believe Buffy was with the Immortal which just didn't make sense at all and was unlike the character. I know they wanted Sarah involved in a couple of episodes but she couldn't due to work commitments and a death in the family so maybe they were just trying to get Buffy in without SMG but it was done in a really bad way
