Spike was actually supposed to be in Firefly, but Firefly was cancelled before they shot the scene, of Spike being at the bar, in some space station the Crew went to.

Buffy wasn’t cancelled. SMG was contracted to 7 seasons and had no interest continuing after that.

Love how they found out they were getting cancelled and pretty much the first thing they decide to do is add Mercedes McNab to the main cast (Liam, not sure if you noticed the updated opening credits sequence?). She'd been in the Buffyverse since the unaired BTVS pilot, glad they could give her a little more recognition at the end.
