I didn't think it meant his soul but it makes sense because "make me what I was before" means a human. The chip didn't change his DNA

Notice how Buffy entered S6 by digging herself out of the earth and was met by demons and carnage and darkness. She exits S6 helped out of the earth by her sister and is greeted with sunshine, hope, and beauty.

Apparently James Marsters wasn't told about the soul until he got the script for this episode, and he has said he would have played the previous episodes differently if he'd known. I can understand wanting to misdirect the audience, but it at least has to make sense in context. The big debate that summer between season 6 and 7 was whether Spike got the soul intentionally or if he went to get the chip out and got tricked, and the ambiguity of the misdirect fueled that.

Agreed. I retcon it as William "using" Spike... kind of tricking the demon into using its strength to get what the human side wanted. Not perfect, but I'm more than happy to fudge it a little. ;p I love the end of this season being a sign that their soul is now going to be returned.

I always find it funny that reactors think that Spike is going to become the big bad.....granted I didn't know he was going for his soul either but I thought at least some magic to better himself...........His conversation wtih Clem is where a lot of people see him distraught and think he just wants to be a monster again but he is visibly hurt that he hurt buffy, he questions how he could do that to her and she deserves better, he doesn't use the word better but give her what she deserves, he's always wanted to give her the love she deserves......even in the earlier seasons Druscilla notes that she left Spike because she sensed something changed in him....took him a whole nother season to realize he was in love with buffy but it was slowly building the infatuation and fascination when he was studying how to kill her. I mean he faced Glory for her. Yes he also did ......that thing, Again as Druscilla said we can love quite well. Still doesn't mean they have moral focus.

I mean apart from the Master, he was the next big cheese and then Angelus stole his spotlight. It makes sense for him to make his mark too. He could acknowledge these things and think weaker of himself.

I'm not usually one for schmalz and obvious bookend symbolism (Buffy crawling out of the grave to the bright day instead of darkness), but the ending of this episode is just perfect for what is, and will always remain, my absolute favourite season of Buffy.

About Jonathan and Andrew hitting the road, I wasn't angry at them. Even if it wasn't for the right reason, they did what was best for protecting everybody else. This is probably my favourite season finale (even though "Restless" is coming closer with every rewatch). It's crazy to think that nobody died this episode, considering how season 6 developed. Also, from the end of "Seeing Red" to the end of "Grave" only one full day passes, so I tend to consider all those episodes like a 3 hour finale

I know that the mascara is a relatively recent addition, but you should remember that, when watching Buffy, you need to get the high end "no smudge" stuff. ;-)

I honestly skipped most of late season 6 right to this episode. A lot of it feels drawn out and done for shock value.
