the creators of course never discuss/confirm the reality of this episode to leave it open for interpretation. The popular fan theory of the time was the multiverse theory and our buffy was switching minds with the buffy of that reality. Because in the end they never even discuss what the side effects of the demon were specifically....so maybe he did bring out the other world for her? ..............since you made the analogy to s5 maybe carry a box of tissues just in case if you're worried. I do have to laugh at the doctor's description of the nerd herd esp in comparison to s5.

I I really like this episode and feel it’s very underrated. While the “monster of the week” is pretty basic, the story in and of itself is amazing! I love how the ending is left open for interpretation!

The memory of being institutionalized is obviously a "dream within a dream". If Buffy had been institutionalized Joyce wouldn't have reacted the way she did in Bad Eggs, School Hard, or Becoming. In my view this episode represents Buffy's spiritual resurrection. She listens to Joyce, and decides to be strong, to be a Normal Again, which for her means being a Hero. The ending just shows that even though she hasn't had the antidote, she has rejected the hallucination.

I love this episode, but it's definitely unsettling. Loving the longer hair too, Liam!

I’ve read some fan theories that it’s a consequence of the Dawnverse which also work for me

Claire Eyles

Definitely one of my favourite Buffy episodes. So many layers, and quite brilliant writing and concept :D

Phoenix Dawn

I never rewatch this episode. It is too much for me.

I think I heard Joss wanted to include a reference to this when he was writing X-Men comics, to have Scott Summers aka Cyclops state that he had a cousin in a mental institution who thought she fighted demons, but didn't do it in the end

Joss had to be talked into keeping that ending as I recall, and it ended up being one of the finer artistic touches on Season 6.

Just realized if he had that would make institutionalized Buffy the "Marvel Universe" Buffy and explain why Blade never met the slayer. Don't know why I find that so interesting.

I'm completely fine with the ending. Buffy hadn't taken the antidote at that point, she was just able to recognise that it wasn't real. So it makes sense that she would still be hallucinating.
