This is relatively inconsequential and it's unclear if the writers intended there to be this subtext, but it's clear to me that Jack was more than just Sam's friend. Sam doesn't use the word friend, his old boss does and then Angel does. But the passion Sam has for an entirely sentimental objective and the fact that his grief compelled him to sacrifice everything he had, including his life, felt very specifically romantic to me. No question. I kinda wish Angel would explore capitalism as a theme a little more. I mean the premise of the show (charging people money to fix their supernatural problems) creates a lot of opportunities that I think the writers just didn't think to explore very deeply or very often. I'd say Buffy touches on it more, since Buffy is putting an immense amount of labor into an essential public service with zero compensation. Season 6 especially has touched on the conundrum of having to get by in a capitalist system while also having to perform labor that isn't seen as something that fits within capitalism. Angel isn't obliged to fight evil, so that is kinda what makes it okay for him to charge people, in this universe. But that huge contrast between the philosophies of the two shows isn't really explored by the text. I don't think they wanted the audience to notice that contrast, even though it's actually pretty realistic when you think about it. And this episode doesn't really have a message. Yeah, "money isn't everything" but really the problem was taking on too many clients. It's not "don't be greedy," it's "dont let your greed make you mismanage your business." It's really just a fun romp, which I enjoy. I never skip this episode in rewatches despite its relative pointlessness. I just wish they fleshed out the theme more in other episodes.
