About to watch this reaction going into it wondering what will be the reaction of Liam as the building breaks down at the end of the episode. Lol 😂 Hmm... and did Buffy in fact come back wrong? Oh and Amy!! Who could’ve seen that return coming. Can’t wait to watch this reaction.

Excited for the reupload, been excited for this one :D

In which Spike thinks he may not be chipped anymore and immediately tries to kill a teenage girl who could be a Dawn cosplayer. And yes, "Fool For Love" chip rules say he intended harm (they also mean he was actually going to shoot Xander & Anya that one time) EDIT: And in which his newfound capacity and willingness to do physical violence to Buffy is rewarded with sex.

Good for you Liam on calling Willow out. She totally deserves it. Saying Tara left for no good reason is insane troll logic. At the end of Tabula Rasa, she's on the floor crying as Tara leaves but yet she tells the gang "little things started taking over, we saw things differently." WILLOW! Delusional much? I love Anya telling it like it is with Will too. One of my very favorite shots of Spike is before the commercial break after he finds out he can hurt Buffy without his head exploding, and the camera does a really tight pull in on his face. OMG those cheekbones! He just looks so good. *shallow* Captain Peroxide. Ha!

This episode is a reminder how Spike is still a soulless vampire, an evil thing. The moment he thought the chip stopped working, his first thought was to kill some random girl. Spike is a great character but he is obsessed with Buffy, it's not love.

Amy turned rat Season 3 Episode 11

CeNedra

oh Liam, you really suffered through that one 😚

Loved your insights on this episode. You're internally having the Spuffy debate that fans have been arguing over for the last 20 years. Especially loved your comparison of the "you treat me like a man" in The Gift compared to "evil, disgusting, thing" in this one. And we're not even halfway through the season yet, can't wait to see your reactions to the rest!

As you were frantically asking “What IS this?!” at the ending scene, I said out loud “self-destruction.” I can’t remember which show runner it was, or which show, but the quote this brings to mind is “Give the audience what they want, but not in the way they wanted it.” I love your analysis, and how you’re never afraid to call out bad behavior, even if you love the character or relationship. Just like Anya, haha! That moment where she finally calls out the situation with Willow is SO satisfying.

Thank you for recognizing the toxicity of the Buffy/Spike relationship. I know they have their fans but I always hated it. I have my reasons that will go into spoiler territory so I won't say why, but judging by your reaction, I think you'll see why. Season 6 was my least favorite of the season because it got unnecessarily dark imo. It has it's great moments, no doubt, but I think it gets too dark and not in a compelling, good story telling way.

I love season 6. I like that it gets dark. Life gets dark so I like that it's having characters deal with real issues. I am also a Spuffy fan just compared to Riley and Angel. I'm an Angel hater. I find him so boring and I also have spoilery feelings why Angel is terrible imo.

When it comes to Spuffy, it was well set up, then horrendously executed, as here. I'm sure the thought was "subverting expectations," but that's always a bad goal (not a bad thing if it happens naturally, but going in with "subverting expectations" as a goal is really... not a goal).

For some reason I thought it was the Bewitched Bothered and Bewildered episode rather than Gingerbread 😂

As soon as the comment referring to him as not being a man came up, I felt attacked with the fact that Spike said you treat me like a man. It’s so eerie seeing the relationship in the Gift and now here xD

Great reaction. I'm glad you pointed out the mutual toxicity of the Spuffy relationship. I've seen so many people talk about how horrible Spike is in this episode for saying Buffy came back wrong (which is definitely horrible) but most seem to overlook how bad Buffy's treatment of Spike is as well. She's been using chipped Spike (who was unable to defend himself physically) as her personal punching bag whenever he said or did something she didn't like since S5 and the way she treats him after kissing him both in OMWF and Tabula Rasa is horrible as well. She knows full well he's been in love with her for a long time, kisses him several times but whenever he tries to actually talks about it she's dismissive and insulting. I know Buffy is very depressed but being depressed does not give someone the right to hurt someone else. The comment about Spike being a thing was cruel. I find it interesing that Spike only starts being toxic towards Buffy after she mistreated him for a while. It doesn't excuse what he said to Buffy of course, cause again, being hurt does not justify hurting other people and what he said was absolutely cruel. But I think it's a good reminder that he does not have a soul and can still be dangerous if provoked.

"I want both of them to thrive, but I can't support this." Is my favorite reaction to Smashed that I've seen. As always, I am super impressed with your insights into the character's perspectives :) I hope you enjoy your new place! Thanks for sharing with us :D

I honestly love Dawn's and Tara's relationship and how affirming Tara is about being in Dawn's life.

Derek Garrard

And if someone does want to insist that it is love, then it's a purely selfish love. Spike would be fine with Buffy destroying herself if it meant he could have what's left. Good relationships strengthen those in them, with each party supported by their partner and helped to achieve a better version of themselves and that is nowhere to be seen in Spike's "love". His love is painful, bloody, and violent and he revels in it.
