Whoo hooo.. not my favourite episode this season but whoo hoooo 😂

Flora Smith

This is IMO a stunning and underrated episode. Pretty much every beat is perfect.

This episode wasn’t my favorite but the Spuffy scene was by far the highlight. It makes perfect sense why Buffy gravitates to Spike when she returns from the dead. He wasn’t talking to much, he had the right amount of patience. And of course, he knew nothing about her coming back from the dead. And then that ending... what a gut punch. For the first time Buffy didn’t have the weight of the world on her shoulders, she was gone and at peace and in heaven and her friends stripped her away from that. 😭 And I really thought you would’ve guessed that Buffy was in heaven during the last episode because you did mention how you didn’t think Buffy would be in hell which was my main issue and I felt Xander had a point in 6x01. He pretty much had second thoughts and talked about how they saw Buffy’s body and buried it. So when I first watched this I was confused as to why Buffy would be in hell so when the end happened, everything made sense to me.

I love this episode. As a horror movie fan even I will say that this episode is genuinely creepy, and the themes it explores as well are just so well done (especially the subtle moments, like the way Buffy says 'So you did that' to Willow).

Raven Dark

I also adore this episode. There's a lot to love. One of the subtle touches that I always enjoy is the hint they kept throwing at us as to where Buffy actually was. There was a lot of angel symbolism in this, but in particular the big angel statue Buffy walked passed in the graveyard. Even I didn't see it coming, but it was a giant hint. Somehow, even with that, the ending reveal is still a gut punch, and it gets me every time.

I think James and Sarah had some of their best acting in this ep (the convo in the crypt and the final convo outside the Magic Box respectively). As for the twist, personally I never thought that she would be in Hell and I still don't buy Willows argument that because she jumped in a hell portal that's where her soul/ spirit/etc went. When Angel went to hell after season 2, his body went as well. They had Buffys body, as Xander mentioned in 6x1. And if sacrificing your life to stop the entire world from turning into hell doesn't get you into heaven, then how *do* you get in lol. I think Willow was just devastated at losing her best friend and was grabbing into whatever excuse she could to get her friends to agree to casting the spell (which i understand).

Flora Smith

I think if she was powerful enough to resurrect her, she was certainly powerful enough to make sure where she was first. So yeah, she was acting selfishly (though understandably).

First Slayer: Death is your Gift Willow: Nah let's return it...

FernWithy

I don't know about that. Nothing in the magic we've seen in the show implies the ability to search across dimensions. From what she saw, Buffy was consumed by an energy field, and their only experience with that was Angel's death in season 2.

KiwiJello

I kind of agree. I was wondering why they couldn't use an Ouija board and contact Buffy BEFORE they did it to see where she was. I mean, it's not a stretch to think it's possible in this universe.

Janel Davis

I love that moment. You're right, it is subtle, but there is so much packed behind that one tiny line. And SMG's delivery was perfect. You could almost hear the words Buffy knows she should say, but this was all she could bring herself to get out.

Katherine Thoreson

Yeah the way they frame that shot of Buffy walking past the angel statue, but they rotate the camera to keep the angel wings on her back the whole time.....I'm not crying, you're crying.

Wayne Adams

Angel and co use an item called the Axis of Pythia to search for someone across dimensions. It is likely that Giles would have known what this is but Willow clearly didn't research enough, possibly from grief and tunnel vision.

Just catching up on your season 6 reactions. When this first aired and every time, I get mad with the scribe gang. Yes, we all wanted Buffy back, but what they chose to do was selfish. They can say they were helping Buffy, but I always viewed it as selfish of them. They were thinking of what they wanted. They didn’t consider she could be in a better place and I always assume it was easier for them to reconcile their actions if they chose to decide she was in hell. And Willow being annoyed she wasn’t immediately thanked made me so mad. None of them try and think how she must feel, except Spike (and Dawn). I love the Spike / Buffy scenes in this episode as they are quiet and sensitive, very different to how the others (Dawn excluded) are being and that last scene between them, when she lets him in on her pain and anger in a way remains one of my favourites. Oh and it was 47 days, so about 6 weeks, rather than 5 months that she’d been gone.

palisade

Hey Victoria, where do you get that it was only six weeks that she was gone. I've always understood it to have been longer based on the events of Angel and when he found out she was alive again as well as the Buffy comics which, while not technically Canon did have a lot of input and supervision from Whedon and his team. If I'm wrong I'd like to know so please let me know you sourced this information. I appreciate it. 🙂

Andrew, apologies. I think I go through this debate in my head every time I watch the show and it’s been a while. I’m never certain whether spike in this episode says 47/ days or 147 days. On watching this reaction I heard 47, but I do remember wondering about this before! 147 days would make more sense, so it’s probably my hearing!

Watch Buffy's facial expression when she says to Willow "so, *you* did that." There's some real rage just under the surface.
