Desperate Souls- Another dark and emotional episode. Thank you for another fabulous reaction! What a great episode! It's definitely one of the stronger episodes from season one and things in Storybrooke are absolutely changing. Things are heating up. :) And the actor who plays Gold, Rumplestiltskin, and the cowardly Rumplestiltskin before he was the Dark One... is phenomenal. Robert Carlyle. No one could ever play this character, or any side of him better. He's just fantastic. Definitely one of the very best characters from this beautiful show, and his dialogue in every scene he's in is truly phenomenal. And.. Rumplestiltskin most definitely plays all sides. :) My only one tiny nitpick about this episode... the scene where Rumplestiltskin enters the castle to retrieve the dagger... it definitely feels strange and it didn't make a whole lot of sense to me. It's really one of the only brief scenes throughout this episode that I didn't care for, because while I really like Rumple's overall plan to get inside the castle... I feel like this scene was slightly poorly executed and could have been done a little bit differently. First... it seemed strange that they didn't at the very least show soldiers and guards running from the castle's room where the dagger was hid upon it catching fire. However, for me it also felt strange to me that the Duke of the Frontlands said to be holding power over the Dark One, would keep the dagger someplace where anyone could easily steal it during the chaos created by the fire, including the Dark One himself while in the disguise of the beggar, unless of course the Duke commanded the Dark One to never touch his dagger again, or something like that. But anyone else could have surely stolen it from within the castle I think. And I think that the Duke would have been smart enough to keep the dagger on him, or at least something so valuable someplace more secure and secret so it wouldn't be found and stolen. But this little issue with the episode was the fault of the show's writers, or perhaps the creators. Not Robert Carlyle's by any means. Rumplestiltskin stealing the dagger simply felt too easy. Overall... I love both the past storyline and the present storyline in Storybrooke. Both are really well done and the parallels from both past and present, as well as the lines being brought back again, are fantastic. I love not only Rumple, but of course Emma and Regina too. And Jared Gilmore's (Henry) acting is really good in this episode. He's improving every episode for sure. Not that I haven't always loved him, because I absolutely do. He's an adorable child. I have a few favorite lines. I especially love Gold telling Emma he knows how to recognize a desperate soul, just as the former Dark One, Zoso, told Rumple. And I love his lines with Regina when he talks about the fine points of a needle, a pen, and of a deal or contract. This line shows just how cunning and tricky Gold/Rumplestiltskin, or the Dark One can really be. Fabulous! I love, love, love the moment between Emma and Mary Margaret at the election, as Emma shares with her, her reasons for wanting to win the election... to show Henry that heroes can win by doing the right thing despite the villains' trickery. And how she fears that if she can't be the hero, or Savior, then what place does she have in his life. It's so sad and quite a beautiful moment for her character. And Jennifer Morrison's acting is quite amazing, all throughout this episode, just as I love her throughout the entire series. Scenes like this are why Emma is one of my overall favorite characters throughout this show. And then... I also love the moment Rumple becomes the new Dark One. What a transformation! Very dark and creepy, and so amazing too. What a brilliant idea for the Dark One to be controlled by a magical dagger and for the power of the darkness to become transferred into whoever kills the Dark One with the dagger. As for the power of the Dark One... there's so much more to come that expounds upon the power, and it's all so good. However, this is definitely a tragic moment for poor Rumple, because he was so desperate to save his son and to become someone other than the town coward, after being ridiculed and mocked for so long... that the darkness of the dagger corrupted him and destroyed the good man he was. As for Zoso... I really like the darkness and eerie feel for the previous Dark One, and how he managed to manipulate Rumplestiltskin into stealing the dagger, then to get him to use it to kill him in order to get Rumplestiltskin to take on what had become too much of a burden for him. The darkness and the power that comes with becoming the Dark One... the price, effects each Dark One differently and each person connects to it differently. As you have seen with Zoso and Rumplestiltskin. Thank you again, Liam! Overall... this is an excellent episode and I really enjoyed your reaction for it. Everyone's appearances throughout this episode were brilliant, especially the encounters between Emma and Gold, as well as between Gold and Regina, and Regina and Emma. And lastly... I absolutely love how Gold manipulated Emma by helping her to win through setting the fire so she could be a hero in everyone's eyes, and I love how he knew the outcome of the election, and knew that Emma would turn against him by outing him to the people so that she could become the new sheriff. I absolutely love his line as he speaks to her about how everyone fears Regina, but that they're more afraid of him. Again... phenomenal. And Robert Carlyle in this end scene with Emma is incredible. He's absolutely top notch. Thank you so much! Such a fun reaction like always. :) Until next time...

I don't always love this show, but I love this episode. The whole storyline with Rumple and Bae is my favorite one in the series.

When I first watched this series, during the first seven episodes of the series I was intrigued by Rumpelstiltskin aka Mr. Gold but it was this episode (1.08) where he became my favorite character of this show because he was just a great villain and his past but we got to see why he became what he did. What made him become obsessed with power. He was tired of being weak and walked all over. He wanted to protect his son and the only way he knew how to do that was to become the Dark One. Then in the present we see the present of how smart Mr. Gold is and how he plays chess when everyone is playing checkers and I was 100% in. This was great to watch. Robert Carlyle portrayal of Rumple is just EVERYTHING.

In a brilliant cast, Robert Carlyle stands out as even more brilliant. The man is old enough to be my father, but I have such a crush on him, lol. He’s an amazing actor and brings the depth and complexity required for a character like Rumple/Gold. Any episode focused on him is guaranteed to be a great one.

LOL.. hi, i’m a new patron, and i’m trying to catch up on these reactions and i stumbled upon this one. last night i had watched your reaction to episode 7 and come across this one almost a day later and see that intro and i’m like.. “oh we’re just jumping right in” and then i’m like “wait, Graham died” LMAO and then i see that you can laugh about how you said that Graham “has a heart” and i was just laughing to myself knowing damn well he (literally) doesn’t. but i found that very hilarious. i don’t usually comment on old posts but i needed to put this out there LMAO
