This particular flashback crossover with the Buffy episode “Fool For Love” is brilliant! The storytelling is a thing of art! I really feel immersed in Spike’s and Darla’s histories, along with their individual obsessions (Buffy and Angel respectively)!

Yea Fool for Love and Darla aired back to back on the same night so they feel kinda like a film :-)

It’s understandable for most people to forget much of Darlas appearance on Buffy season 1 cause it was so short lived but I just love the continuity they have regarding when Angel and Darla last saw each other before Buffy episode 1x7. In that episode, he remarks to her: “what’s with the school girl outfit? Last time I saw you it was kimonos....” And now we see exactly what he referred to, as they hadn’t seen each other since the Boxer Rebellion! Granted, kimonos are Japanese traditional clothes, and they were in China (I forget the name of the outfit that Darla is actually wearing in China), but I just head canon it as Angel not really knowing the difference, and using the word kimono as an umbrella term for Asian traditional wear. In reality that’s a fault of the writers for not knowing the difference......but you get my point. Continuity is awesome lol :-)

I agree that we can explain the inconsistency as Angel not knowing Asian clothing, but I think we can actually give the writers more leeway than that. We know that Angel made that statement about kimonos... and we know that they were in China the last time they saw each other. Those things aren't incompatible. It's entirely plausible that if they were in China they might have recently been in Japan. In general, I totally agree that the continuity makes the Buffyverse both yummy and nutritious. (Is "cheongsam" the name of the clothing you're thinking of? I don't know.) Bringing back Darla in Buffy flashbacks and then in the present on Angel allowed them to take a minor 2-dimensional character and give her a full-fledged significant presence in the Buffyverse.
