Yeah Sony Vegas has been a bit iffy lately but I guess I have to edit some settings since it's pretty newish to the system since I had to reboot everything haha

I'm right there with you, this is in my top 5 also. Such a good episode, the back story of Spike, the breaking of the 4th wall in the middle of the fight with the 2nd Slayer, and the ending, there was hardly any dialogue but there didn't need to be, the expressions on both Buffy and Spikes faces spoke more than words could have, simply brilliant!

Spike might not be the most brilliant when it comes to planning, like AT ALL lol, but he is incredibly insightful/knowledgeable when it comes to how people think. We saw it in this episode while he was telling Buffy how he killed the second slayer, and we've seen it a few times before (including the previous episode where he was the one to point out that Tara's family were just lying about the women being demons in order to control them, not because they actually thought the women were demons). It's one of the reasons he's probably my favorite character on this show, and I've always liked this episode for going into more detail with his backstory along with tying it in nicely with Buffy's desire to learn more about slayers in this season.

This episode is definitely top 10 for me! You briefly touched upon it in your review, but one of the things I really like is the difference shown between Spike and Angel’s stories. Specifically the duality to pre and post vampire. Liam was a reckless drunkard who threw caution to the wind and lived in the moment. As Angelus, as mentioned in this episode, he views all his killings as works of art. William was a man who expressed himself through his poetry. A very artistic soul. Spike viewed killing as chaos and very much “in the now.” Becoming a vampire made him live much more recklessly.

This episode is so good that most people assume Joss Whedon wrote it, he did not Douglas Petrie wrote this episode, who does not get the recognition nearly as much as other writers although he deserves it. Everyone talks about Joss, David Fury, Marti Noxon, and Jane Espenson but Petrie rarely is brought up, seems odd. He also wrote Episode 5 of this season, No Place Like Home, which I also love. He wrote a lot of pivotal episodes of the show in Seasons 3 and 4. He is partly responsible for the creation of the character, Wesley Wyndham-Pryce.

True. And in the era when he grew up, his interpersonal intelligence wouldn't have counted for much (such things were considered a more feminine domain, not real intelligence), he'd have probably considered himself not "brainy." But he repeatedly shows canny understanding of people, except when his own feelings cloud it as they did with Cecily. I've also thought he's a fairly good example of ADHD--even when he does plan, he gets distracted or bored and doesn't carry it through, but tends to hyperfocus on one thing or another. That would also have contributed to him finding school a slog, especially in the Victorian era.

This is a top notch episode; I love it. Loved your reaction 💕. I always tear up at the end when Spike's face changes from pure rage to saying, "What's wrong?"

Catherine Thurmond

This is one of my favorite episodes as well and made me love Spike more. Every bit of your reaction was great.💜

Phoenix Dawn

I love this episode and the way it weaves in the flashbacks! So fantastic, glad you loved it!

The execution of the episode just blew my mind. Inside, I just felt a mixture of hurt and happiness (with how the story felt).

Thanks Cathrine :) I agree, this solidified my love for Spike. He was my favourite vamp before but overall characters, he is top 3 material :)

I watched that moment over and over again because that scene packs a punch and I was getting super emotional the more I watched it. She felt so alone at that moment and her enemy (who has the hots for her) was genuinely wanting to comfort her. It breaks your heart.

Raven Dark

Oh, season five, you beautiful thing. I agree with what you said about how this season feels so great. Everything from the way Dawn was brought in to the way Spike's flashbacks were executed in this episode, to the episode about Tara in Family and Joyce's development as a character thus far is just gorgeous. I love all the seasons, (yes, even season 4, sue me, lol), but episodes like this is why season five is one of my favorites. I know Riley is not well liked, but I even like the way what's going on with him is being handled. Ohh, and I love that the vampire that got her in this episode was nothing special. He didn't have any extra powers like Drac. He was just an ordinary vampire who got lucky, because Buffy isn't perfect, and eventually everyone has a bad day.

Isn't it funny how a SOULLESS vampire can have just as much sympathy as anyone else? LOL! I wonder how that happen... Also, I'm happy to hear you quoting Shan. What did I tell ya? she makes you crack up right? She kinda reminds me of a combo of Willow, Zander and Spike (Adorable, Goofy and... well... I'm not really sure what word to use...)

Jarrod Wild

This is Shannan's favorite episode of the series too. It's not mine but I can clearly see why there are folks out there that would put this on top.
