I think I'm in the minority for liking Riley, but do like him with Buffy and like his character. This episode was not my favorite Riley episode (he was whiny), but overall I like him. When I first watched the series when it came out (I was in college myself), I loved Angel with Buffy, but as I grew up (and Buffy is still my favorite show of all time), I felt that Buffy and Riley were more suited because he is human, more stable and loves Buffy so much. I love your reactions. Your facial expressions with Spike's meddling was hysterical. I really enjoy this episode -- drunk Giles, the argument between everyone, I love it.

You're not alone with the Riley affection, and I'm so glad Liam is with us!

You said you wanted to see Buffy old, but it made me think you might be amused by this Sarah Michelle Gellar pic... from last week: https://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-8298751/Buffy-Vampire-Slayer-fans-wild-Sarah-Michelle-Gellar-brings-characters-dress.html

I think what it comes down to for me is that I think Riley is a decent enough guy. If he were a real person, I'd probably like him. But that's not the same as being a likable character in a TV show.

AGHHH WHY WAS I NOT INFORMED 😁😁This looks wonderful and kinda hits the heart ☺️

liamcatterson

Yeah, he’s not the most entertaining character and has his flaws but he’s okay. I’m not a big fanboy of him but he’s good enough for my liking ☺️

Great reaction, as always, Liam. I'm so happy that your not all pissed with Riley in this one for the assumptions he made about what happened between Buffy and Angel. Or with Buffy for not telling Riley THAT part about Angel. I'm probably in the minority here, but, while I realize that Riley made a mistake in his assumptions, and he shouldn't have gone after Angel, I get why. A lot of reactions from the fans on this ep are very negative, and I don't really understand why. Nothing against fans, I love all of them and I am one, but some of the reactions baffle me. People have gotten angry with Riley for not trusting Buffy when she gave him no reason to, and with Buffy for not telling him everything. Why? One, after his discussion with Xander, Riley is now made to understand that the ONE thing in the entire world that turns Angel evil is sex with Buffy. Buffy went to see Angel. Angel and she used to DATE. When Riley sees Angel, from Riley's perspective, it looks like Angel is evil, because his attacking Riley's friends. He appears to be trying to KILL THEM. The way evil Angel/Angelus would have done. Angel's first words when Riley asks him what he's doing is that he's going to see Buffy. He talks as if something in between them. This is when Riley assumes Angel and Buffy boned. Because, Angel looks evil, and sex with Buffy makes him evil. Riley is not wrong for assuming they had sex. Plus, he even says, "What could have happened to make you lose that pesky soul of yours?" This is not Riley being a dick and thinking, "Oh, they had sex, because she's a female, so she must have screwed him because she woman, so she cheat on me." Plus, as Riley says, things happen between exes. Yes. They do. He's right. I have seen seemingly perfect couples run into an ex and things like that happen, even with the best of intentions. I really like how he said that. He worded it so that it didn't sound like he was accusing Buffy or like Buffy can't be trusted. He has a legitimate concern. I get that people don't like how insecure Riley is, and I don't like it either. It can get annoying, and Riley is not a perfect character, but in this instance, IMO, he doesn't deserve the the animosity he gets for his reaction here. He was being human. Now, before anyone thinks I have an issue with Angel here, I don't I love Angel. What he does here works. I'm just saying that his behavior here didn't help Riley's reaction. Also. I've seen people complain about the fact that Angel and Riley fought, like it's an unnecessary pissing contest. Ok. Again, I say, Angel looked like he was attacking Riley's friends. He thought Angel was evil, and Angel was going to see Buffy. This is not a pissing contest., He was trying to stop Angel from hurting her, because he thought he was bad. Yes, there was a certain level of "I'm going to kick his ass because he's my girl's ex," but I thought that worked here because in Riley's eyes, he's a murderous ex who just wailed on his pals. And Riley's attitude with Buffy isn't about trust. It's about putting pieces together in the only way they appear to fit. As for Buffy not telling Riley about Angel's trigger. Liam, thank God for your reaction to that part. "Probably not great to talk about having sex with an ex." Yes. Thank you. Coming from a woman, I know that tends to be a problem. Every time, and I kid you not, every damn time, I have told a boyfriend about anything I did with an ex, it went badly. There have been times when I had no choice, or else I wouldn't have, and half the time, the relationship ended right after. Buffy is not being deceptive or holding back to be a jerk. It's just something people are programmed to do by society. I want to say women, but I imagine guys get it too. Again, Buffy;s reaction is human. I can't even say whether it's a bad decision, because while it may not have helped, one, it wouldn't have changed anything whether the information had come from her or Xander, and two, it's an understandable response. The point I'm trying to make here is that I don't think anyone's reaction points to bad characterization or unlikablity. I think everyone reacted the way they should have. Well, maybe Angel shouldn't have screwed with Riley's head, but it worked here and it was funny as hell. If I sound snippy here, I'm not meaning to. I just want to put my perspective out there. Love your reaction, Liam. Can't wait for you to see the end of the season!

Yeah, I don't have a vast and passionate love for Riley, but I never got the hate for him. He's an okay guy. (It may be just that the writers expected too much buy-in first season--going from "Who's that?" to "Buffy is going to tell Angel how she finally has someone she can trust"... and to hinging a lot of emotional weight on that person. Maybe if he'd been introduced more slowly, like Tara, then the very same people would be Biley shippers now. ;p)

I think Riley is a pretty good guy, but I've never been able to love him on his own or with Buffy. He's just never become a favourite. He annoyed me in this episode with his assumptions- even though I can understand him having a bit of insecurity. I love that Angel came back to Sunnydale to leave things on better terms with Buffy, even though I don't really think he did anything wrong in the Sanctuary episode. I will always love Buffy and Angel lol so I'm just happy any time they have screen time together.
