I like this episode in that it starts to show a more competent Wesley, I think that is good for the character to make him less bungling and more capable.

One thing I loved about Angel Season 1 is this wild, experimental side to it. They just DID stuff. To a considerable degree, you never knew what you'd get from episode to episode.

I think with Wesley, one thing to keep in mind is that, in "Parting Gifts," Barney was terrified of him--he's perfectly competent when he can overcome his horrendous self-doubt.

Another similar lesson in this episode is that slavery is wrong no matter what, kinda doesn't matter that each individual demon wasn't "good." People's main go-to justification for slavery has to do with perceived superiority over the subjugated, including moral superiority (re: forcing prisoners to do hard labor for next to no pay). So while they may have to track down and kill some of the demons afterwards, it was still wrong to use them in that way.

The first seasons of many shows can be the most interesting if not the most polished, because they take some wild swings at the fences since this might be their only season. Plus, there's a certain charm to the cast finding their rhythm.
