True this episode is not the greatest ever, but the great thing about Buffy episodes, as you pointed out, is that even if the overall episode is not that stellar, there's always something to take away from them. Like with this episode, the stuff with Willow's character, the Buffy/Angel development, and one of my personal faves, Xander bad mouthing Angel while he's standing behind him and then Xander sees him and just says hey man. :D You are correct about the snake demon being used as a phallic symbol. In fact, the name for him, Makita, was taken from the brand name of the power tools the crew used on set.

In the original script the demon Makita was actually supposed to talk haha :-) The intention was also to have him for more than one episode and develop him a lot more but there were a few technical problems with the monster. The make-up was also very difficult to put on. If they could follow the original script, the episode might be a lot better? We will never know :-)
