I decided to go back and clean up the Chronicles of Prydain fan art a little. I liked Taran's face, so I left it as-is, but Eilonwy needed a lot of work (I like her now!). And Gurgi is impossible! Described in the book as neither man nor beast but something "in between" and so hairy people can't often tell he's a person instead of a walking shrub (complete with sticks and leaves caught in his fluff). How do you draw that? Everyone does it differently. I did my best! It's not how he looks in my head, oddly, but in my head he doesn't look like anything. Lol. :)

Kaw is probably too small, but I liked his expression too much to erase him and move him higher on Taran's shoulder. In the back there, Fflewddur, of course, and Good Ol' Doli. Welsh, why so many consonants.

This was good practice for me, doing art of teenagers. I found myself often thinking of my favorite artwork from the multiple editions I had of these books, which was done by the amazing Jody Lee. Lee's art has long been a huge influence on me, and I find I only love it more the longer I go on.

Anyway! This is as far as I'll probably take this sketch: because I didn't plan it as anything serious, it's got allllll sorts of composition problems I don't feel like fixing. But it was a lot of fun. :)

I've fallen woefully behind with snippets (and I'm super interested in the YA book, at that!) due to busy... so glad to get things like this that I can take in in between breaths. :-) Prydain is awesome . Only ever read the first two, long ago. Time to fix that soon, I suspect--perhaps as soon as I can get Child to sit still for a story. :-)

Wow, those covers are very different than the Huens covers I grew up with! I like your Gurgi! The Jody Lee covers scream "Valdemar" to me... oh. Same artist. That makes sense.

Yes! She did many, many book covers for SF/F, and they are all distinctly "hers". It's one of the things I love about her art: her style is so distinct. So many artists were trying for the hyperrealism made popular by Michael Whelan that to see someone saying "you know what we need? More purple and pink in this industry. Also, colored pencily sort of outlines on everything" was hugely inspirational.
