I know, shocker! It actually got into the 40s yesterday, so I brought the candelabra out of the fireplace and shoved the fireplace grate back in place. And then drove off to buy wood so I could get the fire going on the hearth.

I am the fire mistress of the house: I'm inevitably the one making and tending fires for the month or so that it's comfortable to have one. When the "cold" season is done, I'm the one who puts it all away again, and cleans the fireplace. I'm even the one who calls the people who service the chimney. MY FIREPLACE. *hugs it*

The utility of a fireplace in southern Florida is pretty limited, as you can imagine. But for the few weeks it isn't, you will find me perched on the hearth, reading with my toes getting nice and toasty.

I am still watching the Patreon meltdown. Apparently this week, the CEO of Patreon is going to announce something. If it's something useful, I will tentatively continue putting eggs in this basket. If it's disappointing--as I expect it will--I will continue with my plans for alternatives. Either way I'll keep you apprised.

Thank you for keeping us updated. Good luck sorting it all out. I know what you mean about fires. When you wrote about Jahir's fire setting skills I was like "Yes! That's me, I know exactly what he's doing!" I had no idea that was a skill. I just thought it was something everyone knew. Every place I've lived had a fireplace. I had later evidence that fire setting was not a skill everyone had. Weeks after I first read Mindtouch I saw three grown ups fail for an hour at getting one lit. It was . . . sad. I do need to call the local chimney sweep.

Oh yes. Keeping a fire going is *not* a minor skill. The house I grew up in had a gas starter, so my father always made it look easy! It wasn't until I moved into my house in Florida, which has *nothing* to help you get the fire going or keep it up, that I realized 'wow, this is why they teach this skill in Scouting.' >.>

Growing up, I was in charge of reviving the fire in the wood stove in the morning. I got up every (fall through spring) morning at 5:30 and coaxed the embers back to life. :)
