I'm just saying, Encyclopedia Brown makes more sense once you realize that Idaville is in Florida.

Encyclopedia Brown was a pretty big part of my childhood, as I was a precocious teachers pet who paid attention when we had these read aloud to us, so I was able to get something like half of them even when I was a kid. What I lacked was the guile to realize that Sobol should go straight to hell for chapters like this. In one of the few interviews he ever gave, he admitted that he would certainly not be able to solve most of the mysteries if he didn't write them, but young me just thought I needed to read more. Wasn't that how EB got the ability to solve stuff? In that sense even obvious bullshit like this can do some good, I suppose. PS There was a HBO series of Encyclopedia Brown. I guessed (Spoiler Alert) that the answer was eraser just because it said under the chalkboard and I couldnt picture anything big enough to cover money that rests on a chalkboard stand but an eraser. The reason we were supposed to arrive at that answer is insane and ridiculous

I got the answer right but for all the wrong reasons. I focused in on the word "edited" because they seemed to be placing such a heavy emphasis on it. I asked myself what was the most conspicuous way of "editing" something in a pre-electronics classroom and concluded that it had to be erasing a word or sentence from the blackboard and then rewriting it. That left the eraser or the chalk, and the eraser seemed the obvious choice of the two as it is a big, flat, roughly dollar-bill shaped object. I could never have gotten it the way you're supposed to and it just makes me think that if Sobol really wanted the answer to be "eraser," he could have found a far more logical and less insane route to get there.
