The only McGiver I can think of is a character actor with a posh accent who used to play stuffy but good-hearted guys in 1950s and '60s movies.

Speaking as someone from the "football-crazed South" that newspaper was definitely prioritized for it's SEC-favoring audience. Possibly playing for UofA Huntsville is far and away more important than being a mere NFL MVP. So that part tracks.
