A famous person wrote a book so it would be rude of us not to read and discuss this person's work.

First assignment: Read through chapter 6

QB

Mike may have been thinking of the Laugh-In spin-off Turn-On.

Andrew P.

Stopped dead in my tracks and nearly fainted from Connor's pronunciation of "gif". Get help man, we're here for you.

Tyler Short

569 pages! Good lord

Kelly Long

Episode 100!! Party time!!

Jesse Shade

So I googled the book, and Modelland is also the name of a "modeling theme park" that Tyra was looking to open last year before COVID hit, where tickets would cost **$1,495**: https://www.usatoday.com/story/travel/experience/america/theme-parks/2020/02/25/tyra-banks-modelland-theme-park-tickets-sale-up-1-495/4866083002/ So perhaps if this park opens up by the time we're finished with the book, maybe we can fundraise together to buy you two guys tickets and bring the experience full circle. Come on, gang, one of you has to be an eccentric millionaire--let's make this happen!

Jesse Shade

And just so you know, "smize" is the trademark phrase of Tyra Banks which means "smiling with your eyes". It was featured a lot on America's Next Top Model. Please don't ask how I know that.

Kate D

I watched Allison Pregler read this entire book on her YouTube channel over the last year (I think you can still see the abridged version there). This book is truly, TRULY insane. I can't wait to hear what Mike and Conor have to say about it, but I'm also a little worried that it might break them.

Mike Truman

I think that's the deal breaker on this one. Eye of Argon is fun and quirky because it's 40 pages (or so) long. But at 569 pages? We'd hate it with the force of the Sun.

valadilenne

If the video reviews of this one are anything to go by, we are in for a War Hell Ride...

Moviegique

I was just gonna say, this is our first book with a theme park tie-in, since TekWorld and Argonia never got off the ground.

Raymond Doyle

May God have mercy on our souls.

Jesse Shade

The reruns used to be on VH1 quite a bit, so whenever my school had a snow day, I found myself watching it casually.

Noah Eigenfeld

Which one of you updated wikipedia already? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modelland#Cross_media_promotion

Dana F

Famous Person Book PTSD coming right up!

Noah Eigenfeld

"In May 2021, Conor Lastowka and Michael J. Nelson selected this as their next book for analysis on the podcast "372 Pages We'll Never Get Back," a podcast dedicated to books the hosts do not expect to like." in case it gets edited soon

Amy Shaw

YES.

Amy Shaw

“A befuddling piece of dreckitude.” “Certifiably batty.” I’M IN.

Amy Shaw

I totally binged the show when I was single in my 20s with nothing better to do on a Saturday afternoon while cleaning. Oh, who am I kidding. I didn’t clean.

Amy Shaw

I also note that it was intended to be a trilogy. Key word: intended.

Mandie Cornelius

Very much excited for this one!! Got one of those cheap used copies from Amazon and it won’t arrive until June, but I will try to be patient…

Elizabeth Meredith

Found it on abebooks, but it's not arriving until June 15 😿

Crystal

I'm looking forward to seeing how batshit this one is. I can't believe my library has a copy!

Eliza Gillliam

Overdrive has it as an epub.

Eliza Gillliam

"You begin your mornings with staring at the fog, longing for the fateful evening when it will turn a golden yellow and then, finally, like a push up brassiere, lift." Classy!

Tommy Yao

I think Ross Perot would be a more interesting comparison

Steve Schrader

This will be the first book I read along with the podcast. Looking forward to Ms. Banks' Wild Ride.

Jenny S

Snagged it as an ebook from my local library. Page 1 and already dead 💀

Jenny S

Few pages into this and I envision a movie version of this being filmed in the same weirdo 90s “style” as Cool As Ice.

JA Wallace

This is also the first book I will read along with the podcast. However, I just finished the 3 page prologue and it’s almost too much for me. I’m afraid I’ll be cutting myself by Chapter 7.

Taylor Conner

“Super Dave” Osbourne’s response to Adam Eget asking “Where do you get your ideas from?” is priceless, as is everything about Norm MacDonald Live.

Taylor Conner

The Super Dave episode was the first one and maybe the best. That show has some of the funniest moments I’ve ever seen... Hoping that one day it comes back.

Balaji S

Maybe I'm misremembering, but wasn't this book mentioned before (on this pod) as a potential candidate, like on one of the in-between episodes? Either way I'm stoked, my local library is open again and actually has a copy (mostly I'm excited I can go back to the actual library).

Zann Reynolds

This is exciting. Props to the person who submitted it. I remember the challenge where the girls had to perform scenes... big yikes.

JLG

It'd still be better than Shadow Moon.

Amy Shaw

I read the first three chapters last night. I'm reading the e-book, so it's hard to tell, but I suspect the formatting must be why its so long, because it was not a slog. I mean, it was completely insane. But it went quickly. On a related note, I'm never eating whipped cream again.

Amy Shaw

I think it depends on the audience. Fortunately, your audience is full of well-read polymaths who enjoy simultaneously catching up on the latest issue of Foreign Affairs and binge-watching America's Next Top Model. *hair flip*

Taylor Conner

Yeah, mine doesn’t arrive until the first week of June. Since this one is a little harder to find, maybe they will wait a bit before they start?

Emily Brown

Yes, but it's downloading as an ascm file?! Very weird, but I can read it on my phone or computer...yay?

Tyler Short

I really want to read it, cause I think it'd be fun and this is my first new book since I started listening. However, I got into Yale's writers workshop and will be work shopping my first novel all next month, on top of 10 other manuscripts to read, so I'm gonna hold off on this one.

Suzie Baunsgard

It was, and I was one of the people who suggested it. (The response I got was like 'you're definitely not the first' in a nice way.

Dave Chadwick

Got a kindle version of it and... this is already completely bonkers.

Elizabeth

My copy is on its way. From the sound of it, this is going to be the kind of bloated, rambling, hackneyed yet random insanity I remember my writers group days, only with (slightly?) better editing. I cannot wait.

Jennifer Tomich

I hope you guys are happy at what you’re doing to my library reading stats/recommendations.

Jackal651

Some options for those awaiting delivery of physical copies of the books. E-copies are available at Open Library (https://openlibrary.org/works/OL16086806W/Modelland?edition=modelland00bank_0) and at the Internet Archive (https://archive.org/details/modelland00bank_0).

Eliza Gillliam

Can we please PLEASE do a watch along of Next Top Model season 17 where the contestants actually recreate the book in a short film? It's on Hulu. From wikipedia: America's Next Top Model, Cycle 17, Banks instructs the four remaining contestants in episode "Tyson Beckford" to perform as characters in the novel, in a short film based on the book, with part 1 of the film broadcast in that episode, part 2 was broadcast in the season finale.

Eliza Gillliam

Oh god, why am I already on chapter 12....

Zann Reynolds

I remember watching this and it being hilariously cringe, so I agree we should watch with some fresh Modelland context.

Shawn

Boy that Lindsey Lohan can't swim a stroke but she sure knows every dive in town.

JoshuaJSlone

With usually weeks between episodes, plenty of time to catch up before the end anyway.

Will Keightley

This has been in my Amazon cart for almost a year because I kept thinking, "Any day now..." And now that my copy has finally arrived, I get the added bonus that it smells powerfully of Chanel No 5. I'm 100% sure I've got Christy Turlington's old copy!

Mandie Cornelius

I just got my cheap used copy from Amazon! When I opened it, I realized it had been signed by Tyra herself with a sharpie. 😂 Anyone else have this happen?

Eliza Gillliam

Check that. Now I'm on chapter 27, switching from tablet to phone, reading even while walking my child in the stroller. I.... Can't... Stop...reading this crap....

Jake Westbrook

That happened when I bought a used copy of one of Mike's books (it was signed by Mike, not Tyra just to be clear)

Eliza Gillliam

Someone please stop me. I've been reading this damn book day and night, on my phone or on my tablet. I just got to chapter 47.

Sarah Goldstein

I made a playlist of Modelland related content. https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLbWCVplj03742EgTKK59ysDA4TH6tg1zt

Jennifer Tomich

In addition to the Allison Pregler YouTube video, may I recommend the Satellite Dish podcast episodes where the hosts of Sawbones slowly lose their minds breaking summarizing Modelland way back in 2013: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/satellite-dish-with-justin-and-sydnee/id493439623?i=1000128151130 https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/satellite-dish-with-justin-and-sydnee/id493439623?i=1000131357725 https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/satellite-dish-with-justin-and-sydnee/id493439623?i=1000136250259

Amanda Martyn

I had to read ahead this time as I borrowed the E-book from the library. I didn't need to read it all in one week, and yet I did just that. Honestly so hard to put down once it got going.

Eliza Gillliam

Update: I finished the book. I'm with Amanda Martyn, it's hard to put down once you start, even at the crappy first kiss scene at the end. Barf! I even tweeted at Tyra Banks to tell her I couldn't stop reading it. She never replied. Part of me wants to see this book as a graphic novel, and that part will also be disappointed with the artwork as it'll look nothing as I imagined it. I still laugh at the fact my husband kept looking over my shoulder while I was reading and asked "What's a Ci squiggly L?" And "What's wrong with the name spellings in this book?" 🤦
