After countless pages of Worldbuilding and freeing child slaves when our hero felt like it, Ernest Cline finally lets some things happen in this section. The action kicks off when a Gunter and a Sharter listen to a Morissey song in silence and it doesn't let up from there! By the time we're done, there's been a kidnapping, a shareholder's meeting, and the rollout of a new firmware update. Also, Cline introduces his most annoying tic yet: telling us information again that he just told us. And by the time we're done with this section, there's been a kidnapping, a shareholder's meeting, and the rollout of a new firmware update.

All this plus Real or Fanfic, Emails, and Dumb Sentences. Stay tuned for a bonus Real or Fanfic as well as some fun stuff next week.

For next time: read thru Chapter 16

Conor describes the book as a "pedantic encyclopedia". Really, I think all encyclopedias should be pedantic. That's their job. Novels, on the other hand...

I was watching "Desk Set" the other night (great Hepburn-Tracy movie from 1957). Hepburn plays a fact-checker, and there's a scene where she has to quote "Hiawatha" to someone on the phone, and after she hangs up she can't stop talking in trochaic tetrameter. I mention this because I fear that too much Cline is going to cause Mike and Conor to have a similar reaction and go around for months, or even years, explaining cultural references to everyone they come across. "I saw the new Wonder Woman movie last night. Wonder Woman is a character who first appeared in 1941 in a comic book published by DC Comics. DC Comics is a comic book publisher that . . ." and on, and on, and on.

Bridget and I just watched Desk Set (of course on TCM because we're old) and like a lot of things I was wrong about its authors: I always thought it was Garson Kanin and Ruth Gordon. It is not. William Merchant wrote the play. All that being said, yes, Conor is going to go into computer-Cline mode for a while. I am resistant, full of antibodies.
