Interestingly, we never were taught to do this in school where I grew up in Florida. Of course, they also have the "Gordon Rule" in Florida, where you're required to write a number of words in college to prove you can read and write because we were giving giving degrees to people who couldn't. Sooo...

Oh, there's been a basic literacy test in California schools going back decades for much the same reason. Not surprised it's reached college.

I learned grammar using the “Shirley English” method which mostly consisted of singing about the parts of speech to the tune of Row, row, row your boat. In other words, I didn’t learn grammar.
