I have been a huge fan of Matt Colville for a long time and I loved Matts new video about prepping an adventure using inspiration from maps, and it's basically what I already do with my game except I use my scenes instead of maps.

I mostly play theatre of the mind D&D in person and so I don't usually have the need for maps. And when I do, I just barely sketch something out on graph paper and it usually works a treat. And like Matt says in the video using beautiful maps for inspiration is a great way to get started writing, whether you actually use them at the table or not.

So recently I have been browsing through my back catalogue, picking out three scenes and using it as inspiration for scenes that I can link together into a short adventure. Like he also says in the video, this is a blast to do and really gets me thinking when I am stuck with my homebrew game, though I'm sure this could work with prewritten adventures to.

So for example I used my Royal Gardens location to write an adventure where the party is first summoned to the gardens of a wealthy noble patron and asked to steal back a magic family heirloom that was lost in a card game of chance to a Guild Lord in the city.

Then the Guild Headquaters location where the party spends time canvasing the guild headquarters, and make a plan to infiltrate the building and break into the magic item storage vault.

Finally the Magic Item Room where they manage, through skill and luck, to avoid detection and break into the magic item vault. They find the lost heirloom, only to pick it up as several iron golems pulls themselves to life, readying weapons.

This was a blast to write and then run as an adventure, and I have done this a couple of times now for example using my Sailing Ship, Jungle Island and Ocean Cavern locations to write an adventure where the party land ashore a remote island in search of a ships light relic to aid the Captain of the vessel.

Anyway, all this to say I can vouch for this style of writing an adventure, whether you use maps like Matt suggests or just location scenes like I do, depends on your style of play I suppose. If you like this idea let me know because I'd love to know how folks are using my scenes and I would also like to write more of these kinds of posts in the future.
