Nate and Milo continue an exploration of the UP series, this time with the second half of 1984's 28 UP. Is it hauntology to imagine a time when you could get a council house and support a family on a food processing job? Is Britain ineffably depressing no matter the social conditions? Is there such a thing as looking 'too Australian?' Find out more in this episode.

On the subject of Peter Gabriel - Nate (and to a lesser extent, Milo) you need to check out Life of Rock with Bryan Pern. It's a rock mockumentary that ran on BBC Four years ago with Simon Day as a very thinly veiled version of Peter Gabriel, and features a bunch of cameos (including Peter Gabriel himself). It's an absolute riot.

Australian min wage is definitely higher than other countries on paper but Oz is in a wage crisis where real wages have barely risen in the last 12 years. Inflation has been over 12% in the last 18 months, but most private and state employers (even those with staunch unions) are lucky if they get 4% rise. Some key industries like aged care workers etc have had a rise of over 15-25% but these workers were horrendously underpaid to start with. Oz cost of living is also fairly brutal for rent and groceries so even if you’ve got a decent degree going into a white collar sector, you’re looking at 15+years to get a house deposit together (if you’re that way inclined) for a place in a metro area. Failing that, you can move regionally where we have under staffed and chronically underfunded healthcare, education, social care + the regional housing crisis and low wages compared to the metro areas. Tack on how bloody cooked our continental climate is (1.1 degree rise in temp in a century) with >60 declared disasters from flood, fire or storm since 2019. It makes it unaffordable/ bankrupting to insure homes or businesses so underinsured people literally lose everything because they payouts they to do get, alongside the shit wages, can’t rebuild shit.
