Great stuff. Stephenson's novels reveal that he thinks the Judge was the protagonist of Blood Meridian the same way many people think Rorschach was the protagonist of Watchmen.

Honest question: why isn't Rorschach Watchmen's protagonist? I fully agree he's not a role model, but still, we mostly experience the story through his perspective, his actions definitely contribute to moving the story forward, and he does go through a character arc of sorts — which ends with him asking for death, because he can't handle the truth of what he learned.
