This week, we're speaking with IPPR researcher and friend of the show Laurie Laybourn-Langton (@Laurie_L_L) about his new book 'Planet on Fire: A Manifesto for the Age of Environmental Breakdown' (co-authored with Matthew Lawrence). We also talk about a deeply stupid SPAC that JD Vance is hawking, and some other stuff about the whole climate thing. Yes, the guy who runs the SPAC is named Jeff W. Ubben.

You can buy Laurie's book here (it debuts on April 20): https://www.versobooks.com/books/3702-planet-on-fire

Great call out on Exxon for the "massive capital investment" they are making in lower carbon investments. My favourite of these is Philip Morris International or "PMI and beyond tobacco".

Completely, 10,000% agree that Bitcoin is dogshit and a climate disaster and has absolutely no valuable use whatsoever and my last two podcasts are about how shit it is in extensive detail. It therefore pains me greatly to say that the factoid about BTC consuming all of the electricity of solar panels is not actually true. David Wallace-Wells said it in 2019, and it subsequently went viral, but that doesn't make it so. Here's the editor of Carbon Brief: https://twitter.com/DrSimEvans/status/1382593395974111233 Solar in 2020 (Ember) 844TWh Bitcoin today (U Cambridge) 139TWh (43-477TWh) Again, I absolutely hate bitcoin, literally my last two pods are trashing it, and the fact that it uses perhaps 12-50% of the total solar production is obscene and unjustifiable, but you want to be right, otherwise the dumb cryptolibertarian bros can point to this being incorrect as evidence we don't know what we're talking about (not that you can win an argument with them anyway)
