I can't wait for Sword Art Online: Progressive: Scherzo of Deep Night!! It comes out this year or early next year I think

Misumi is an anime original character to help lead in introducing Asuna to SAO and bridge the gap a bit more. In the light novel, she kinda just steals the Nerve Gear out of curiosity and then gets stuck in the game alone and stays behind in the town of beginnings because she's scared of dying. Then she goes out to the dungeon because of her new found determination to clear the game or die trying. That's when she bumps into Kirito in the dungeon after being there for a week straight and then the story essentially stays the same there after. (Obviously cutting out the bits that have Misumi in the scene as she is again, anime only)

Even with the anime only additions and changes imho as a LN reader this is the best anime representation of SAO we ever had, in fact it was an anime only scene that was the first to properly portray Kirito in the anime as he was in early Aincrad in the novels. That scene of him saving Asuna and trying to talk to her while trying to sheath his blade, and failing repeatedly at both, until he just gives up and awkwardly walks away is completely anime original but it perfectly captures Kirito's character at this point. The anime has a tendency to force Kirito to look cooler than he is supposed to be, he is just a socially inept and totally awkward dork that is good at games and puts up a front to protect himself. The anime usually manly focuses on portraying that facade while falling to capture what is beneath that, but this scene shows it off pretty well without even having to hear his thoughts or monologues.

Actually, the second movie has been announced already, it's coming out in Japan on 10th September!

Some additional information. As others already mentioned Mito is an anime original character created for this movie, since they wanted to make it a fresh experience and show it from Asuna's POV but all we had on her POV at this point is that she used her brothers NerveGear on a whim, after the start she locked herself into an inn and cried herself to sleep for a week or two and that after that she went on that suicidal grinding spree in the Dungeon Tower. That alone wouldn't make for much of an engaging intro into the series, so that's where Mito comes in, showing Asuna the very basics, experiencing the start with her and being parallel and foil to Kirito at the same time. Sword Art Online Progressive came to live when back during the production of the original anime they asked Kawahara Reki for a story about the first Floor. SAO originally starts on Floor 74 and aside from a short flashback to day 1 everything else is side stories that were added later, Floor 1 didn't exist as a story at that point. Reki always regretted that so he took that opportunity and wrote what would become Aria of a Starless Night. Though Reki being Reki, he wrote way to much for a single episode, he wrote more than half a novel for that one Floor but the anime only dedicated Episode 2 of the anime to it, resulting in a ton of stuff being cut in the anime version. From there Reki continued to write Progressive, not as a reboot but as a companion work to the main series, while there are some small retcons it's mostly simply there to fill the holes. He is currently at Floor 8. The next Progressive movie is already basically done (I hope) since it comes out on September 10th in Japan. Though it's gonna be the story of Floor 5 instead of Floor 2. They are skipping to Floor 5 for now because Floor 3 starts a long spanning Quest Series that hasn't ended yet and they don't want to adapt it before they know how it ends. Floor 5 is pretty isolated from the that overarching plot so it can pretty much stand on it's own.

you can say Progressive is a remake of the original light novel story that's why here we saw Kirito meets Asuna for the first time when he saved her but in the original anime and light novel was in the first floor boss meeting. Misumi is a non-canon character, The studio added her just in the movie.

It's not a remake it's all new material, there hasn't been a single thing in the progressive novels that was in the original Light Novel. Their first meeting didn't exist in the original light novel, it was only written when Reki wrote Aria of a starless night. There their proper first meeting is when Kirito commented on Asuna overkilling the kobolt in the dungeon tower.

I didn't mean remake by that

Thank you for all your informative comments guys you rock!

Random info here, the time when Asuna join SAO she is just 15 years old and Kirito is one year younger than her which is 14 years old, and after they were release from SAO they were 17 yo and 16yo becuz the duration of the whole SAO incident is 2 years. The movie is based on SAO:Progressive Light novel which is a separated story from the main SAO light novel story line(It's more like the author rewriting about all the details*additional information* and what happen to our main character in each level of Aincrad, and this light novel is based on Asuna's perspective*that's why the main character of the movie was Asuna*, *the main story is Kirito's perspective*). And based on that, Mito is actually a original character created by the anime studio for the movie, she doesn't appear in any part of the SAO Progressive Light Novel(or you can say in the whole SAO story), that's why we don't see her in any series that had been published.
