not a spoiler, you do know the nametag. Rei is just short for Shourei Nouzen which obviously is Shins brother. you remember Shin cut his name into a piece of his brothers machine after defeating him theyve shown him with that tag multiple times since. just wanted to clear that up.

Ok explanation time! Those little scenes with Shin and his brother (remember the brother's name is Shourei, often just shortened to Rei) in the white void are the anime's way of showing how Shin and the others survived in a metaphorical sense. Unfortunately, it mostly doesn't make sense if you haven't read the light novels so here I am to explain how it went down in the light novels for you! So episode 11, Shin confronts the Legion, everyone gets knocked out and we assume they are captured by the Legion and die. HOWEVER, in the light novels, we get parts of the story from the perspective of Rei, Shin's brother. Those pieces let us know a few things that happen while Shin and the gang were unconscious. First and foremost is the fact that Shepherd Legion can move their consciousness into a spare body. After being "defeated" by Shin in episode 10, Rei's mind gets cleared up a little (it was being corrupted by the Legion), transfers into a spare body (a Dinosauria model Legion) and follows them around for a little. When they get attacked by the long-range cannon in episode 11 (the Shepherd who says stuff along the lines of "I'll kill you! Everyone, the women, the children, the nobles, the peasants, anyone who wishes to harm the princess!"), Rei defends Shin and his friends from the Legion until the forces from the nearby Federacy arrive. The Federacy ultimately destroy Rei's new Dinosauria, thereby killing him (as far as I know, Rei is gone gone this time). However, he did buy them enough time to be saved by the Federacy. If you remember when the president was asking his people if they found anything off or odd about them (just making sure they weren't inviting in something that could hurt them, like an unknown Legion bioweapon or spies from another country who mean to harm them, etc.), they mention that they found a Dinosauria model Legion with them - this is the only reference to Rei saving them that the anime gives unfortunately. Just a couple other things that y'all either missed or misremembered: - Shin's box of tags was left behind with Fido in the beginning of episode 11. Shin chose to leave it there was a marker of their final resting place because he knew they wouldn't survive much longer with only one Juggernaut left. - The tag the president gives Shin at the end of this episode is one we've seen before. It's the tag Shin made for Rei. He took it off of Rei's abandoned Juggernaut that he found, but since he knew Rei had become a Shepherd, refused to carve a name into it until he had defeated him in episode 10. Even still, he carried the tag around on his person, rather than putting it in the box with all the other tags. - One thing to note, no spoilers, just something to think about: Take another look at the drawing Frederica made of her and our little gang. If you look closely, she messed up on Shin - it looks like she originally drew him with dark or black colored eyes then realized her mistake and attempted to color over it in the correct color, red. This has more significance than you think. Apologies for the long comment and can't wait to see your reactions to the rest of the episodes!

Actually is not the only reference to Rei saving Shin. The way Rei saved Shin was showed using symbols in Shin's dream . Last episode Rei changed in a knight armor, that symbolized the moment he transferred in another legion, in this case, Dinosauria. He carried Shin in his arms and then he left him down he saying :" This is as far as i can go. You can go the rest of the way yourself". That's the moment Rei died. If you look in the background there was a broken Dinosauria

This is true, there is a lot of symbolic or indirect references to it. I forgot to put it, but I meant like non-symbolic/direct references. Like physical, in-the-real-world evidence that Rei was actually there saving them beyond what Shin saw in his dreams.

Oh you think the knight armor means transferring? That's interesting, I already read the novel but I thought it would be a symbol of Rei finally freed from his guilt toward Shin and returned to a kind brother, a hero of child Shin.

Nox

The knight armor scene from the anime does have some symbolic references like referencing that he was Shin's knight, protecting him from harm and also a direct reference to the book he had been reading him and Rei's personal mark (the book is about a knight, I forget the title tho, and Rei's personal mark is Dullahan - a headless knight). However, what I'm referring to about transferring is a literal thing that happened, not an interpretation. Straight from the beginning of Rei's POV, page 49, Volume 2: "In order to preserve data, the Legion's mission recorder was set to transfer the battle data from a downed unit's files to a nearby consort unit. In the case of a Shepherd, it would transfer everything - the central processor data included - to a spare unit prepared and designated ahead of time." Rei follows it up by saying that even though this system is in place, the rushed nature of it (happening right before a unit was destroyed) left the data damaged and the spare units barely functioned, so they wouldn't last long.

Thank you so much for the insights, we shouted u out on this reaction Nox. And thank you everyone for all of your insights, so much info on the light novels!
