Hello patrons, and welcome to episode 8 of Nina's Nihongo Zone. This month I talk about the use of familial terms (eg "Oniichan" / お兄ちゃん or "Big Brother") to address non family members - a subject about which I am almost as confused after researching as I was before! But it's interesting all the same. I also talk about Japanese New Year's greetings.
- Jisho.org (my old fave)
- Quora discussion of what languages use familial terms with non-family members, and the when's and why's of that.
- From the Ask-A-Teacher section of "Japanese from Zero" - a Japanese language teacher gives a brief explanation of using familial terms for people you don't know.
- Maggie Sensei breaks down New Year's greetings, and explains some Japanese New Year's customs (her website has lots of great grammar explanations too - I highly recommend checking out other topics she's covered).
- The intro song is "The city" by The Kyoto Connection, from the album Kyoto Soundscapes, licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.
- The outro song is "Brain Power" by Mela, from the album Mela two, licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.
