Hello patrons, and welcome to episode 5 of Nina's Nihongo Zone. This month I talk about accents and dialects - does Shangri La have a distinct accent? If ZZ were hyper-realistic, SHOULD Shangri La have an accent? What do they use accents and dialects for in anime, and how are those Japanese speech patterns rendered in other languages when an anime is dubbed?

- Wikipedia pages on “Accent” and “Dialect.”

- Article about the Antarctic researcher accent study.

- Page on “Language Change” from the University of Pennsylvania’s Linguistics 001 Introduction to Linguistics course, taught by Professor Mark Liberman.

- TV Tropes pages on Japanese dialects (with examples of series and characters that use particular dialects), and their Kansai and Tohoku-accent specific pages

- Very detailed page about Kansai-ben vocabulary and grammar.

- The intro song is "The city" by The Kyoto Connection, from the album Kyoto Soundscapes, licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.

- The outro song is "Brain Power" by Mela, from the album Mela two, licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.
