I have to disagree about Lee at San Bernardino Strait. I think any admiral coming through that strait at night would most dread being engaged when still in that confined space. If the USN has -- as seems to have been the case -- learned to turn its destroyers loose to act on their own, thus keeping the lighter forces occupied, then the BBs should be able to fire safely from long range concentrating on the first capital ships coming through the strait. I don't see how this would have gone well for the IJN. Would balsa reduce the danger of splinters?
