The Drydock - Episode 186

00:00:00 - Intro 00:00:35 - Did any other ship have a name as pretentious or more pretentious than "Sovereign of the Seas" ? 00:01:48 - What are the advantages and disadvantages of having a ship placed in cement like the Mikasa? And if there was a ship that could have the same treatment, which one would you like it to be? 00:07:33 - Pivot mounted carronades? 00:12:47 - AA Machine guns in both world wars? 00:18:52 - If the Dutch viewed Sovereign as such a menace and failed so many times to sink her at a great loss to their own navy, why not just try to ram her? Surely the loss of one additional vessel would have justified the loss of such a valuable British asset? 00:22:29 - RN budget comparisons 00:27:02 - Ship testing ranges? 00:29:25 - What was more impactful for the USN: the loss of Lexington, the loss of Yorktown, the loss of Wasp or the loss of Hornet? 00:33:32 - Hull projections on superfiring destroyer mounts? 00:36:44 - In the age of sail did larger guns cease to use solid shot at close range to increase damage? It seems like a solid shot from a dalgren would waste most of its energy exiting the opposite side of a ship at close range. 00:38:53 - Danube frigates of Prince Eugene? 00:43:35 - Essex class flexing and expansion joints? 00:48:35 - How good were early 20th century naval designers at estimating the speed of a design from the blueprints and models? Was there ever a big difference in expected and actual speed in the dreadnought to WW2 era? 00:52:58 - Italian style refit for the Fuso's? 00:58:24 - Japanese APD equivilants? 01:01:29 - What do you consider Admiral George Anson's most important accomplishment to be? 01:06:41 - Channel Admin An archive of Drydock Questions and free naval photos - www.drachinifel.co.uk Model ships of many periods - http://store.warlordgames.com?aff=21 Want to support the channel? - https://www.patreon.com/Drachinifel Shirt/mug/hoodie - https://shop.spreadshirt.com/drachinifels-dockyard/ Poster? - https://www.etsy.com/uk/shop/Drachinifel Want to talk about ships? https://discord.gg/TYu88mt Want to get some books? www.amazon.co.uk/shop/drachinifelDrydock
