Thank you for answering my question, Lord Drachinifel- Viscount of Surrey.

On the submarine I was on (and I never knew of one different), the helmsman never sees out, period.

With all due respect, I must give a bit of disagreement regarding the Japanese carrier subs. A number of attacks were made on the US West Coast during 1942. Admittedly, tactically they were of insignificant value; but strategically they had considerable effect. True, the Ellwood Oil Field attack wasn't perpetrated by a carrier sub, but it made the west coast folks super edgy and was probably what led to the, 'Battle of Los Angeles'. On Sept. 9th, 1942, Nabuo Fujita, flying from the I-25, did make an incendiary attack against the US in the area of Brooklings, Oregon. Not much damage was done, but never before or since was the continental US attacked by a bomber and the west coast population cried out for more protection; which the Navy could not provide and at the same time bring the war to Japan. This was a direct response by the Japanese to the Doolittle Raid- Yes, USA, Japan can bomb you too. Deal with it.

As a Midshipman (RAN), I was to spend my first night on a sub, just sitting on the bottom of Jervis Bay. Going aboard, down the ladder, my very first thought was "But there are no windows!" 😉

I missed the first live stream but I'm heading over now to have a gander! Yes, please advise Patreons in advance. If you start from the position that many of us are very lazy, you can't go far wrong...

I am noticing the delay in international post also with other stuff I am buying. I think US Customs is slow rolling clearances and blaming the pandemic.

Drachinifel

Very true, I think my approach considers what other, better, uses, you could put a sub of this size to. For the effort invested, even the coastal panic wasn't something one of the smaller IJN aircraft carrying subs could've pulled off.

Sending is rough, too. I posted a parcel for Drach almost a month ago- and he hasn't got it yet.

Understood- though the whole concept of a submarine popping up out of nowhere and spewing aircraft does seem to undermine the whole concept of the IJN Most Honorable Combat.

I was USN. One day in Pearl Harbor, was topside and saw a RAN diesel boat arrive. We were impressed and embarrassed. We were a nuclear powered sub, with one big rudder in front of one propeller and handled like a pig. We also had much larger displacement. They had two propellers with rudders aft of them. They used side force to pivot and docked without tug in just an instant. This we couldn't do, but they did it expertly.

I'm not fully caught up on the other drydocks etc. Have you already looked at maritime quarantine? The only thing I know about is what was in the episode of Hornblower!
