The Drydock - Episode 089

00:00:34 - Censored German photo 00:02:44 - State yachts being armed? 00:05:11 - How much coal did a protected cruiser burn? 00:08:51 - Distinguishing features of destroyers vs cruisers? 00:14:33 - Would the Admiral Spee in WWI successfully reached Germany if his fleet didn't engaged at the Falklands Islands and continued his journey towards Germany? 00:20:55 - When do you plan to show the video on HMS Caroline? 00:22:34 - Would Graf Zeppelin have been a threat to the Royal Navy? 00:28:08 - Do you plan on doing any videos on proposed ship designs which we never got? 00:32:44 - Which submarine service was the best in terms of boats and crews, USN or the Kriegsmarine? 00:39:18 - Repainting the RN/USN? 00:40:59 - How do you see Allied casualties if the nukes dont exist and the Allies are forced to go through with Operation Downfall? Also, how would you rate the Finnish navy against the Kriegsmarine in 1940/41. 00:48:13 - If the Kriegsmarine had realized their U-boats were being plotted and hunted by radio intercept and code breaking, what would they have done? Lone hunters under radio silence? 00:52:52 - What would change, if the ironclad race of armour vs. guns was won by armour? 00:56:25 - In your opinion, what was the single most unlucky class of warship that was more than 2 members? 01:02:20 - 1.) I know of the Dutch ship that disguised itself as an island to evade the Japanese in the Pacific Theatre. Did any other nations try to Disguise ships in port or near coast lines to avoid bombing. I think it may have proven effective for the Germans if they could hide Gneisenau and Sharnhorst in Brest prior to the Chanel dash to try and avoid photo recon missions and bombing. The Italians could have also used it to hide their fleet from the Taranto bombings. 2.) You talked about a sweet spot for naval building prior to the First World War where Britain’s naval building plans were centered on the 2 power standard and infamously the Germans started building a lot of ships for no other reason than to use them against Britain. Was there a similar case in the lead up to the Second World War. I.E. did Britain shift naval building plans to counter or better combat the Kreigsmarine or the Italian Navies. 3.) finally what is your real life job? New Drydock, awesome! :D Also, here is again a question for Q&A I had posed in the Patreon thread last month and which I think you missed - What would have been the duties of a Royal Navy midshipman on a destroyer circa 1910? Also, would those duties have changed with the start of the war? EDIT: Also, since you've struggled with it before, both of the "u" sounds in my name are short, like in "but" and the "c" is pronounced like the "c" in "cup". The final "r" is like that in the word "your". Or you could just pronounce it "Bukar", that's the closest I get with most English speakers...

Glad the bombs were dropped as dad was due to sail for Japan landing and I would not be here.

Q&A What would the consequences have been for the treaty cruisers if displacement limits were lifted by 3-4 thousand tons? Looking a the balance of designs like the Baltimore compared to the New Orleans, would they have gone straight to that size and firepower, OR would there have been no impetus to spur the design the design of more efficient technology such as better boilers (size to power), welded construction etc.

if the US battleship New Jersey were somehow transported from oct 1st 1968 to just after the attack on pearl harbor, could she run down and destroy the japanese fleet as they were landing their planes and getting ready to make way. since the NJ would not have missiles or guided weapons, could the advanced radar and fire control and top speed of 35 knots enable her to sink or damage the japanese carriers and engage in a gunfight with any japanese battleships in their fleet. possibly a night attack which could nullify the carriers airwing? I picked the 1968 NJ to avoid the missiles and such. thank you.

Q&A- How would you rank the top 3 "classes" of warship that were the most impactful in the first half of the 20th century ? My personal list would be "Essex, Fletcher, and German type VII U-boat", but "Town, Higgens, assorted floaty things evacuating Dunkirk" and others also have an argument..

Why do you dislike the WWII Arethusa class cruisers? They gave a good account of themselves in the thick of the Mediterrean action. In many ways they were a better design than the Didos carrying as many guns but with the 4" AA being a better AA weapon and the 6" being a better surface weapon with roomier turrets.

I enjoyed the Enigma video very much. I have a question about the use of Ultra intelligence by the Allies. Are there examples of specific operations based on Ultra information that had a significant impact on the outcome of WW2?
