The Drydock - Episode 061

00:00:18 - Channel Admin, 75k giveaway winner, new giveaway announcement 00:03:27 - An apology and some extra info 00:04:32 - Did the WW2 regia marina ever acquire any radar equipped vessels? 00:06:36 - Destroyer / Flotilla leaders? 00:08:59 - HMS Prince of Wales underwater hit 00:11:08 - Lion class Q turret 00:13:41 - Yamato battleship AA 00:17:20 - South Africa and warships! 00:21:22 - Plunging shells at close range? 00:25:25 - Iowa and KGV armour schemes 00:31:59 - Aside from Blucher in the german navy are there any other "cursed names" on warships in other navies? 00:33:53 - Had they been built, how would the G3 and N3 designs have lent themselves to mid-war upgrades after navies found out that the answer to "how many AA guns do you want?" was "yes" ? 00:37:45 - Can more than one Mogami powerplant fit in an Admiral? If so, how much extra knots would it be granted? 00:43:53 - What are your all time favorite warships? And what do you think about the addition of Submarines to World of Warships? 00:46:54 - What is the purpose of having Marines stationed on board ships? Was their presence solely for defending against/taking part in boarding actions, or would they have been used for landings using a ship’s boats? 00:53:00 - During major refits, how exactly is a ship's beam made wider? Is it just anti-torpedo bulges that extend the beam? Do they have humongous pistons that physically stretch the width? 00:54:13 - What did the RNAS do during WW1? Were they effective, and if they were why was it decided to merge it with the RFC to form the RAF? 00:58:03 - Had the Spanish gone with a Jeune École approach versus building the España-class dreadnoughts how might that have affected actions in the Spanish Civil War? Would such smaller ships have been better suited for the conflict? The new Astute class submarine which was to be called Ajax is now to be called Agincourt which I think may please your naming sensibility.

In terms of Cursed ship names HMAS Melbourne (the Majestic class aircraft carrier) cut two destroyers in half

So if a spectacular crew killing loss of a vessel is a reason to retire a RN name, why were there at least two HMS Vanguards after the 1909 St Vincent class vessel of that name detonated in Scapa Flow in 1917? In particular it seemed a little tempting fate to give a Boomer sub the same name as a ship that blew up so spectacularly.

I have an Uncle Drach coffee cup. I would SO TOTALLY PAY a premium for another with H.M.S. Warspite on the obverse!

I will guess, it's down to political reasons beyond the scope of this channel. yes, some names are retired and not used again, and yes, others are used again despite horrific outcomes of the former ships. Welcome to the realities of the world being a lot of shades of gray rather than cut and dry absolutes. Some just feel that some names should be retired, others have less reverence for such things, and even the 'bar' for what goes where depends on who you ask.

I wanted to get some of the "superstructure of doom" merch, however, it vanished by the time I had funds in my account. The Drach mugs do look nice, and having a ship on the other side would be epic. Kamchatka, Bismark, Yamato, the Kamchatka, Hood, Sand-going torpedo boats, the Kamchatka again, "Enterprise vs Japan.", Black Pearl (Pirates of the Caribbean, joking), HMS Victory, I really am joking about the Kamchatka as well, lol. It would be sweet to have Drach mugs with random ships on the opposing side (including the Warspite).

2023-02-08 18:15:24 (Note to self for this month when that thread happens.) Q&A: was there any advantage to having the more spherical bows on the older sailing ships that newer sharper/pointed 'Atlantic' bows didn't offer for ships of the line? stability in rough seas, simple buoyancy needs, or something else? I would think the more blunt bow would make the ship slower, for sail-powered ships anyway. (EDIT, this may have been answered in an early dry-dock)
