Ship Welding Processes I have done a little welding, both gas and arc. Also I have spent most of my working life designing and supporting the construction of steel vessels. During this time I have seen some very high power welding machines in action. These are way beyond stick or later wire feed hand welders. Both gas and arc welding processes work by fusing the adjacent parent metal, and then adding filler material. Were the arc welding scores is in the rate of heat input, and thus kg of weld metal deposited per welder (operator) hour, and thus the cost per kg deposited.

Currently oxy and TIG are used for thin and/or specialised materials. I hope this clarifies the situation. Similar considerations apply to aluminium fabrication, where MIG (wire feed with argon or other) shielding is the general process of choice.
