Something some people don't realize in this episode, is that the "headband" Aang wears is actually a waist belt. That's why all the kids have "headbands" at the end of the episode.

We did this during school here in the U.S. when it comes to the national anthem. As much as we joke about North Korea, the U.S. has some weird tendencies when it comes to nationalism. I mean we start most national games, college games or even highschool games with the national anthem. In country people have flags showing statehood and it's really jarring for most other nationalities.
