They were not really trying to kill a little girl, they just wanted Asta to use his powers so the Royals could see his devil powers. The chairman knows Asta is innocent but they need a sacrafice to appease the Royals. So its either the "Devil" takes the blame or the the Knights take the blame for attacking people.
