Yes when Luffy does Gear 3 he’s blowing in to his bones during the Lucci fight he literally says “Bone Balloon” before Gear 3rd ( Hone Fūsen | which translates to Bone and Balloon )

It's been a looooooooong time since the first Gear 3, so I don't blame you guys at all for not remembering this. You might want to rewatch a clip of the Lucci fight. But the full name of the technique is: "Gear Third: Hone Fuusen" Hone Fuusen means Bone Balloon. On the other hand, Gear Fourth is Kin'niku Fuusen, meaning Muscle Balloon.

Gear 3rd part was true also Gear 4th is inflating his muscles which is why gear 4th has a more muscular appearance than gear 3rd while gear 3rd is just more bloated and rounded like a ballon.

Luffy always says bone fuusen, means bone balloon, i think you guys just missed it everytime he does g3 lol. G2= pumping blood to make his body move faster, normal people will die from heart attack and veins popping out. G3= putting air in his bones. G4= air in his muscles from armament hardening.

When gear 3rd was first revealed back in Enies Lobby, he called it "Bone Balloon" and followed up with something like "see this power that transfers from one bone to another. This arm is now the arm of a giant" It shouldn't technically add mass, but inflating his bones will distribute the mass of his arm more evenly, and the elasticity applied over a larger area like that can transfer energy more efficiently, kind of like those videos of people getting launched by exercise balls. It technically shouldn't cause a lot of blunt damage, but it could launch someone as if the mass was increased
