The strawhats have commited piracy a few times before. They can be called pirates. And there are a lot of people that can be called pirates today. If their main way of transportation is a water vessel and they commit crimes on other lands and/or on the sea, they're pirates.

I'm with Lycan on this Marine or Pirates being the good guys or not, in most cases the marines are following the law and trying to save people. And most other pirates we have met rob and plunder. So most marines are trying to do good and help the people, and the pirates only care about themselves. And I think it is displayed pretty well throughout the series :D

Yeah it’s pretty clear that Pirates do the bad things the navy does way more. And no matter what your crew is like most people will lump you in as a pirate that does negative things. The fact that we’re following a mostly positive crew like the Strawhats make people forget that majority of pirates do terrible things.

Pirates can be good ppl, Pirates are just adventures that are not Beholden to any country and laws. Simple as that. I wouldnt consider pirates evil historically. Pirates came after the british spanish war and pirates did follow a code of honor/pirates law; very democratic everyone had a voice/vote on the crew and can even vote off the captain. They frequently freed slaves from slave ships at sea and treated them better and even equally among their crew. From my understanding a lot of pirates back then mostly did theft of wealthy merchant ships or spanish ships. They generally avoided bloodshed and rarely kill. So it can be considered a BIASED perception of what you have of what a pirate is. Their crimes back in the day mostly amounted to thievery of the rich. The richest pirate to have ever lived Belamy fought for justice. He was known as Robinhood of the Sea. "In a famous speech attributed to Bellamy, he scorned the wealthy merchants he plundered: “They rob the poor under the cover of law, forsooth, and we plunder the rich under the protection of our own courage.”

You're only picking a small percentage of the "good" pirates. Hell, even Shanks doesn't doesn't himself a good guy. Vast majority of pirates in One Piece are evil, thats just a fact.

Yeah, but those weren't the only pirates. The Barbary pirates held the Mediterranean and on accounts dealt in slavery. Even the real Blackbeard who freed slaves, would then turn around and sell them when it suited him. The "Vikings" were pirates, and they certainly weren't afraid to raid towns of non combatants for their goods and people. To do a "viking" was essentially a call to be a pirate. The Wako were Japanese pirates who attacked China, Korea, and the Ryukyu kingdom. And as far as richest, check out Henry Avery... he certainly wasnt a peach.

See the thing is, One Piece is more about Law vs Chaos then it is about Good verses Evil. Pirates want the freedom to do what they want which is Chaos, while the Marines want people the Follow the Laws and restrict what you can and can't do, which is Law.

First of all, Lycan said he's with the Revolutionaries way back before today. That's been his stance. As for this whole debate...I mean most of the bad stuff in this series we've seen is done by pirates. Just look at every arc we've come across, most of the enemies are them. Besides the Water 7 and Summit War Sagas everything else has been pirates. Hell most of the bad stuff the marines have done have been against pirates when you think about it lol. They're not great, make no mistake, Akainu's a piece of shit but we can't forget that early on in East Blue we had pirates enslaving villages for the hell of it. There's corrupt pirates and corrupt marines both and I'd say there's more corrupt pirates than anything. That's what makes the Strawhats and all the other good pirates stand out, they're different. They break the mold. I mean there's a reason why a lot of the people we met earlier on in the series were worried about pirates, most of the ones they've encountered (look at the previous arcs) were bad. Sure, the marines should all be "good" but they're not. Still there's better morals than "pirates." Shit even Luffy himself said he doesn't wanna be considered a hero in the last arc. There's been multiple times where Luffy said he doesn't want the praise and multiple times where they've stolen from people just because they're themselves. Still they're the Strawhats. If they're like this imagine everybody else. I mean Law, mans out here taking 100 hearts lmao. Like, the Strawhats and their cohorts aren't normal "pirates", they're different.

Most of the public believe in Marines than pirates. After the Impel down and Whitehead's death, piracy increased, look who's sent to protect the public. Hell even Akainu was out there.

Lycan, normally I disagree with a lot of takes you got but you are 100% right on the whole starting debate. Amenz is just focused on the perspective of being a viewer. The whole is vast and there is a lot we don't get to see or know because it's not that important to the story. Then Amenz uses speculation to make claims about all Marines being evil when he can't prove it, but won't accept the equal opposite. Marines by large are loved by the public in the world of One piece and hate pirates because a Majority of Pirates do evil things and Marines stop them. Facts. If marines were truly overall evil Dragon's revolution would be more widely supported and a larger faction.

Amenz... i think on this one your vision of what's happening between The Marins, The WG and the Pirates is not that good. I will always recommand ppl to read the manga One Piece, because it is very important to get the message behind guys like Akainu or Garp. Guys like Smokers or Cobby. To go further in this manga and anime, it is important to really understand that there's no all bad or all good groups, they all fighting inside of there own groups because of that. we have seen Akainu destroying a ship full of civils, but in the same episode, Saul give is life for Robbin... Theyre both Marine.. A certain POV is giving to us, we follow the bad guys, because we fight them.. But the civils of OP univers adore the marins, because a lot of good is done by them. The civils are still more afraid of pirates... Remember them all civils having parties after Whitebeard and Ace's death.. why ? because for them, Marine did more good than pirates did

Oda in his original storyline of romance dawn had two subclasses of pirates, there was the peace-mains and the Morganeers, Morganeers: Pirates who go out an pillage and plunder are classed as Morganeers. Peace Mains: Pirates who seek adventure on the seas and feed on Morganeers are known as Peace Mains.
