What makes you float in water is air in your lungs. This means that your upper body floats, while the lower body sinks. Slowly kicking or frog leg kicking will help you keep floating horizontally. If you fill your lung you'll float better, and if you exhale fully you'll sink (we can kind of control our buoyancy).
