Here's what we've been up to this week, starting with a word from Vixel!

4/05 weekly report

Save system progress! I've gone into every conversation in the game and added unique save tags, and reworked the savegame scripts to use these tags when reading/writing data. So we have human readable tags like: "act1_bridgequest_delivertoytomaverick_p1" and those uniquely identify an act, quest, quest-step, and conversation.

Here are some use cases:

  • Migration scripts can 'upgrade' a savegame from v0.16 to v0.21 of the game, for example, since I can check a savegame for specific tags and fill any gaps if needed.
  • We can add backdated content (eg if someone has already played to the end of act 2 in a monthly build, but we add an act 2 quest or dialogue that's supposed to occur earlier in the game's storyline).
  • I can rewind a savegame to some previous state, if needed. (Like if we wanted to force players to totally replay an improved quest without destroying their whole savegame.)
  • If I add a trigger to some conversation that's already been played, I can make sure it gets recorded as 'played' so the savegame doesn't get out of sync for the remaining quests.

I also got dialogue working properly when playing movies from the Start Menu > Gallery. Have to finish going through the movies and adjusting scripts, then I'll make it an option so you can toggle dialogue on/off. Will also be upgrading the gallery soon so you can play all the art from unlocked Stories/Dates!

Switching gears this week to work on new Act 2 quest/story content, since there's a backlog of art and dialogue to import & script! :O
