I read Alan Cumming's book a while back. When I saw his episode of "Who Do You Think You Are?," spidey senses screamed at me that his ancestor was killed. I also felt the guy they interviewed about it might have been the killer. In his book he described similar feelings. He had to eat next to the guy and his skin crawled and he felt threatened by his presence. His ancestor was kind to the indigenous people and there is even something named after him there, to this day. The other police were cruel and worse. They'd photograph murdered locals to taunt him (think KKK types of activity.) I believe one of the bad ones killed his ancestor to silence him, and to stop his charity toward the people.

In the official report about his ancestor's death, it concluded he somehow un-alived himself, although the bullet entered on the side and slightly behind his head. Impossible angle. I think one person called him somewhere, and another snuck up behind him.
