Funhouse Mirror

King Charles is very brave. He smiled and waved when he exited the hospital. Presumably he knew his diagnosis before that time. Queen Camilla also was fairly stoic. She looked concerned; but that would be understandable, even for the surgery itself. (So I thought things were as appeared.) The news was a shock to the public, and very sad to hear. The wording made clear it's not prostate cancer, by calling it a separate issue, and benign. Prostate cancer can be with someone a long time, as my FIL had it and was told "you will likely die with it, not of it." I don't want to medically speak much but what I heard was, less testosterone in elderly men, means it's not being fed as rapidly. (I could be mistaken.) But we're not told which "form of cancer" in this case and that's his right, to stay private. As to the seriousness of it, of course it's always serious and people will have to live with the fear it could return, even after successful treatment. I'm sad for the king and also for those close to him. And William, must be very worried about his wife and his father at the same time. He needs support and looking after so he won't fall ill from all the prolonged stress and worry. I hope King Charles fully recovers and stays healed.

Some people mock stoicism and those who practice it but isn't it really just courage. Queen Elizabeth II knew she had bone cancer. That must have been very painful. Yet she still showed up in public, smiled, and walked, and stood for hours, including at her Jubilee. The idea of being stoic in the face of pain or illness is not to burden *other people* with it. In modern navel gazing terms everyone must share all hardship all the time, meaning everyone feels overwhelmed some of the time. Maybe stoicism is not all bad.
