My father was involved in the military atomic testing in the desert. He did die of cancer but it was YEARS later in the mid 1990s. It wasn’t like everyone involved was walking around with active radiation poisoning symptoms - they were given some protection. It might be a John Wayne movie you were thinking of - my dad mentioned to me that Wayne shot a film in the same general area later on and many on the film died from cancer which is why my dad wasn’t surprised when he got it later also.
