Katie Cook not a book

The newborn is the patient and needs a custodial parent in attendance while in the hospital. A room would need to be issued and in Ca it’s customary to hold newborns for 2 days for testing and circumcising for boys

@Katie Cook not a book I wouldn't compare a surrogate to an organ donor. Both go through arduous and potentially life threatening procedures for someone else's benefit. In both cases the physical ramifications for the donor or surrogate can be lasting, even lifelong. But there are more and more cases in which the adult child later wants a relationship with or at least to meet and speak with the surrogate (or IVF donor.) Even when the donor had requested anonymity. So their contribution does not end with the birth itself. (On a scientific theme: Studies show the infant's DNA can go into the gestational carrier: https://www.smithsonianmag.com/science-nature/babys-cells-can-manipulate-moms-body-decades-180956493) So, in perhaps a small way, the infant can literally become 'part of' the surrogate. I understand what you are saying, as far as insurance or bureaucracy in hospital settings. But then not every surrogacy birth is in a hospital, as far as I know?
