To sculpt this I started with a sphere. Once i had the general elliptical shape, I used alt+inflate to define the eyes. I also used normal inflate to bring dimension to the face such as the cheekbones and chin.

Next I began the pull out the tree branch like bits on the top of his head. I masked a circular area first to make sure the base of the branch wouldn't be too big. Then I used move-topological to bring it straight up. Then I moved it around a bit to get a shape a liked in conjunction with the pinch brush.

Finally, I used the clay build-up brush with a line textured alpha to give that wood appearance. I went back with the move brush to move the lines and give more dimension. This is especially noticeable on the front of the face where a nose would usually be.
