Thank you Daria for the video. Since I am just starting as an artist and I have no background in art I have a lot to learn. I frequently mess up my canvas. What would you do if you were to fix something in your canvas and start over ? Or would it be better to keep painting layer over layer on it ? Also, if your reference picture is not clear how do you determine where the shadows and highlights should be placed?

Hi JP, thanks for your comment! Sometimes it’s better to keep painting over the existing layer, but each situation is different, so if you want to change what’s been done drastically and completely, I suggest just starting over. To answer your second question, I avoid working with bad reference photos. I’m sure I talked about it in some videos. Even when you’re a skilled painter it can be very challenging to work with unclear references and you’ll be doing a lot of guess-work, so if you’re just starting out, I strongly recommend choosing good photographs (or to work with live models)

Very interesting quiz. A good exercise / reminder to hang the color wheel in my work area. Daria, thank you for the reminder...

I used to have the color wheel near my easel with a few other notes/reminders for myself, it can be very useful to have in your work area, I completely agree!
