Hi Daria! Could you please tell me how you paint the transparent brushstrokes on the final result? Maybe you have some tips on it. As I am a more than beginning, I would be so grateful for your reply! Your paintings are awesome!

Daria Callie

Hi Anna, For these transparent strokes I mix a peach-pink color, in this particular example, keeping in mind that it will look a lot colder and bluer over the dark tones. I use transparent and semi-transparent colors for this such as alizarin crimson, ultramarines.. or zinc white instead of titanium white for example and so on. (The transparency of the color is indicated on the tube and looks like a square: an empty square – means transparent; half-filled – semi-transparent and a filled square indicates the color is opaque.) So then I dilute that color mixture on my palette until it’s quite watery. You can use Liquin for this or some oil-based medium, that’s your choice. I usually add a little bit of bleached linseed oil and then liquin, so that it will help with drying since it will take a long time otherwise. I take a big brush, dip it in this mixture and go over the areas of the painting I wanted to add the strokes to. It takes a little practice to get a handle on it but at the end it’s not so difficult to do. Hope this helps! :)
