Welcome, Broth Siblings and Supperstars, to the first episode of the Supper Mario Broth Supper Show!

Today, I will take you on an 11,820-word journey to the lands of Super Mario Bros. 3, where I will attempt to use the scientific method on a cartoon plumber's escapades.

Please download the version you prefer most - one has background music, the other only intro and ending music - or listen to it in your browser using one of these private videos: BGM version / No BGM version

A transcript is also provided in PDF or text form.

Thank you all so much for supporting Supper Mario Broth. Without you, none of this would have been possible. Please leave any feedback you have to help me make the next podcast much better!

Thank you very much for listening!

Despite me not being overly familiar with Super Mario Bros. 3, this was still enjoyable to listen to! Now for some feedback: at the 5:30 minute mark in the BGM version on YouTube, there was an odd sound glitch. It also appeared in other parts of the recording, though I don’t remember all the instances of it. You may want to look into what could have caused that. I would also recommend rising the music volume just a smidge, as it was so quiet that it was almost inaudible at times. Other than that, you did an excellent job making a well thought-out, deeply researched, and entertaining podcast! Looking forward to more content like this!

As far as I know this is generally caused by cell phone interference, especially from older cell phones.

Now, this is less of a complaint and more an idea, but I think it’d be fun if after you say “It’s time to get hooked on the brothers, this is the Supper Mario Broth Supper Show!” some sort of topic-relevant sound effect played. (Like the warp whistle for this episode, perhaps)

Thank you very much! I regret not having a clearer idea of how quickly I speak; I believed 10,000 words would translate into 1.5 hours of speech, when it was less than 1 hour. However, now I have learned enough to be able to ensure that next month's podcast will in fact be 2 hours long, by making it no shorter than 24,000 words.

This was a really good first episode for the podcast, but something bothered me afterward: was there a metric that you could have pulled from later entries in the Mario series? After all, just because it had not been released yet does not make the method of counting levels in, for example, Super Mario World or New Super Mario Bros. Wii less valid as an official method. I would even have been satisfied if these were brought up solely to show if or why they didn't work, but by not mentioning them you left me with a remaining question. Either way, I really enjoyed listening to this, and I am very much looking forward to future content. Thank you!

Thank you very much! I thought about bringing up other games in the 2D Mario platformer series, but they can essentially be divided into two groups: one where an official level count exists but is arbitrary, like Super Mario World where Super Mario Advance 2 establishes a level count simply by including a list of what it thinks are levels; or ones where an official level count also does not exist, like New Super Mario Bros. Wii. Every other game in the 2D Mario platformer series has less variety in their levels than Super Mario Bros. 3, so tackling them would basically be the same kind of task but with less depth, at least from what I can tell. I hope I will be able to preempt such questions in future podcasts!

I never knew it was possible to answer the question, "How many levels are there in Super Mario Bros. 3?" in such a scientific manner. I am thoroughly impressed.

Thank you very much! I only had 2 weeks to work on this episode, so the depths and lengths of subsequent episodes, for which I will have 4 weeks, will be much greater! I hope you will like my next podcast, where I discuss in detail the environment of Super Mario World, as well!

Other Patreons I support that provide regular audio content provide a private RSS link that I can add to a podcast app on my phone. This would be incredibly helpful for me. I understand if it's not something you wish to do, though.

I'm terribly sorry! I was unable to figure out how this works in time for this podcast's scheduled release! I can promise you this will be in place for the next episode. Again, I apologize; please tell me if there is anything I can do to make up for this.

This is a very minor point I only mention because of your note at the beginning, but I'd recommend looking into Japanese pronounciation, specifically in regard to how you put emphasis on syllables - your pronounciation of "Shogakukan", while technically correct, sounds excessively strange to one familiar with the language (it would be better pronounced sho-GA-ku-KAN, rather than SHO-ga-KU-kan). Aside from that minor gripe - and I only mention it because of your commitment to accuracy - this was a great listen! I enjoyed how the question of how many levels are in SMB3 was used as more of a platform to discuss the scientific method in general.

suppermariobroth

Thank you very much for the correction! Are there any websites or resources you may recommend where I could look up pronunciations of Japanese words like that? If not, I will certainly find something myself, I am just asking because you seem to be an expert! And thank you very much for your kind words! Yes, I hope that my podcasts will be able to not only tackle the surface issues presented, but also provide information on underlying concepts.

Hey! Kinda off topic, but i made fan-cover for this podcast: https://imgur.com/a/KoJQkAT I have linked both standalone logo and a older looking cd case.

Thank you so much! I really like the color schemes! I hope you will enjoy the next episode of the podcast, as well!
